Ten/Rose shippers aren't the ones who wrote that blatant Rose reference in the Christmas special. Just sayin'.

There was a Rose reference in the Christmas special?

People believe he last saw her on Christmas while it was clearly New Year's Day. At least that's the way I understood it.

That wasn't from this last Christmas special.

I think they mean, among other things, the line where Kazran is all "how could you pick one last day to spend with your beloved?" and Abigail is all "Christmas day!" -- the interpretation being that Eleven's mournful look there is him thinking of Rose (and seeing her one last time... on New Year's).

Personally I do not think that counts as "blatant" and I doubt it is what Moffat was going for, but it's a vague scene, so I don't think there's anything wrong with people reading into it whatever they want. I've heard, in addition to Rose: Romana, Gallifrey, Donna, River... It's pretty open to interpretation.

Ah, I get it now. I personally would interpret it as all of the above, frankly. Poor dear has had quite a lot of last days with people he cares about.

Yeah, the doctor has lost a lot of companions over the years. Several much more tragically than Rose. I mean, Rose is still out there very much alive.

It's possible he was pining for Adric.

Yeah but it's the saying goodbye on Christmas Day thing that made me think it was about Rose. Isn't that when Ten said goodbye on the beach?

Honestly? I can't remember. Which is so incredibly sad since I watched that episode a few months ago. *headdesk*

Was it? Not a single synopsis I can find says so, but it's been FOREVER since I watched the episode ...

He meets Donna immediately after, and Donna's wedding/Runaway Bride takes place on Christmas Day. But the actual beach scene, I think the TARDIS was just hangin' out in space, so I am not sure that counts.

Yeah, can't be talking about anyone other than Rose there. His one true love thingy.

Yeah, it was something I didn't catch at all (beyond going 'awww, poor Doctor - being quasi-immortal sucks') and only know about cuz I follow a few people who are crazy huge Doctor/Rose shippers.

But the Doctor spent a couple years with Rose. And when it came down to it, he didn't spend one last day with her. He met with her for a few minutes on the beach and wished her good luck with the human-him. And I seemed to recall people wanking about how cheap that was.

Eeeeyup.

From what I've been seeing of the fandom, I'm pretty glad that I didn't watch the show until this summer - the Doctor/Rose stuff is craaazy. And I probably woulda been swept along with it - I was kinda crazy OTP-centric a few years ago.

This view is hilarious to me, honestly.

Yeah, the Doctor, see, he doesn't really DO last days. Companions either go "welp this is my stop" (Susan, Turlough, to an extent Romana, Martha, etc) or they get yanked away from him in varying shades of tragedy (Jamie, Zoe, Sarah Jane, Adric, etc).

I wish the obnoxious NuWho fans wanking about Rose would just shut up and watch some Classic Who. Or, yanno, read about it on Wikipedia. It'd take them about thirty minutes to get quite a bit of perspective.

'Blatant' is really not the word I'd use.

Knowing Moffat's opinion of Rose/Ten, I doubt it was that.
