I'm inclined just to attack the writers. The attempts at Mercedes's characterization are so failtastic and embarrassing that I'd rather they left her alone, particularly in this season.

And sure he's been a huge asshole to her this season, but it just seems so OOC that I barely attribute it to Kurt himself.

I'm only a casual watcher, but weren't they like actual friends in the first season? Every time we see them together, it's never friendly so why bother at this faux friendship at all? Perhaps, sadly, they just don't know what to do with Mercedes.

I've only watched the first season, and I still kinda went "yeahhhh :(" when I saw this secret, so?

that said, they were better at the beginning of the first season than at the end, even, at least imo. the "call me before you dress yourself" & "you look like a technicolor zebra" type things were kind of bitchy from the outside but nothing I wouldn't say to my closest friends? so idekkkkk. *chinhands* IT WAS GOING SO WELL.

What I've heard about this season sucks, though. :(

While I do like Kurt's character a lot, I do rather agree with this. Mercedes has been a good friend and he does drop her like a brick.

Yes, i get all the first love, yadda yadda, becoming blind to anything but the object of affection, yadda yadda.

But you'd say he would show some ppreciation for those who stuck with him.

They were my FAVOURITE in season 1. I loved their little moments of mutual eye-rolling and walking around arm-in-arm and hnghgngh CUTESICLES
but of course girls only want to hang out with guys to fuck them! He's just her surrogate boyfriend, because, y'know, girls don't ever have male friends who are just friends

I really dislike the way they're handling their friendship this season... but the way Mercedes didn't really object to what Kurt said (the substituting for a boyfriend thing) made me think he may have been kinda... right about it? I mean, Mercedes fell for Kurt at the beginning of S1. Sure, she now knows that Kurt is gay, but the feelings may still be there. I mean, I really don't like the implications of that, that girls can't be just friends with guys (without any attraction/romantic feelings involved), but this stuff does happen in real life in friendships between hetero women and gay men. I hated the way that confrontation was handled though, Kurt's "I'm not breaking it off with Blaine" seemed to come out of nowhere and it felt like we missed some scenes before it. And he was really insensitive about the whole thing.
I also didn't like how he tried to hook her up with that guy and kept breaking up their plans because of Blaine. I guess it's yet another example of Kurt showing us that love makes you stupid. I can kinda understand him though, he's waited his whole life to meet someone like Blaine. Still, he should have remembered who his best friend is.

True, they aren't perfect friends to each other. Keep in mind, Mercedes isn't always the amazing caring friend either. Her trying to force Kurt into accepting some type of religion when it was quite clear he was not interested comes to mind.

He sucks as a friend from time to time, but Mercedes isn't faultless either. Had a best friend given me grief for being an atheist, held vigil and prayed over my comatose father when I expressly asked her not to and then, when I finally agreed to go to church with her, outed me as an atheist in front of a crowd of god-loving people about to sing for Jesus, I would have been pissed as hell.

As someone who's not-Christian that actually hit pretty close to home for me. So I've honestly had a hard time cutting Mercedes any slack ever since then.

In that way, Kurt's probably a nicer person than I am since I would have dropped her like she was last week's moldy tater tots.

Respect me, respect my religious choices and all that. Try to keep "showing me the light"? Well, they know where the door is or if they don't they'll be finding it soon enough. That's not what friendship is supposed to be about.

Yeah, I think he's not a very good friend either. I wish, as much as Glee could, they would develop their relationship more rather than throw out Kurt-Rachel friendship fanservice.

Not really. They're both pretty shit friends, if you're going into that bit. But it's getting over that part that makes best friends just that. If I held everything my best friend has ever done to me against them, we'd be here a while. The only point on this list of his faults that I could even buy as wankerish is possibly the boyfriend set-up one, and even then I think that was an honest mistake. (Likewise, Mercedes' biggest fuck up was the entire Grilled Cheesus circus. But the less said about that, the better.)

I think they're being perfectly IC in every part they've done (including Mercedes' Cheerioes/weight thing. As someone in a similar position to Mercedes, I can believe that storyline verrrry well). And they work as realistic best friends, at least to me. They're just divas, attention seeking (for relatively good reasons on both parts) and insecure to go with it, just like a lot of teenagers...

I'm a Kurt fan, but I agree. I wasn't happy with Mercedes' actions in Grilled Cheesus, but when I think about how sad and weak their friendship has been this season, most of it really is at Kurt's feet (he was especially wretched in the Substitute). But his writing this year is kind of questionable in general, and it's pretty much always terrible for Mercedes, so I don't see it improving much, sadly.

See, but he's only a jerk when it's convenient for the storyline that week. :P The entire tots thing made me rage (except for Chris' awesome reaction shot when that girl screamed "TOTS!!!" in the cafeteria), but we've seen him be a great friend to her other times & I'm sure we will again. I can't love anyone too much or write anyone off entirely on this show because the writing's so inconsistent. Sigh.

I totally agree on one count only -- the situation with Blaine, and the way he basically ditched her when he found a new, gay friend he could relate to on a different level (and whose bones he wants to jump :P lol). I felt like the way the writers tried to turn that around to make it *Mercedes* who had the issue was really messed up, though I attribute that more to poor writing than anything else.

The episode that dealt with her weight? I found a little more excusable. It was about issues with body image *in general*, and Kurt obviously was having some issues with *his own* body (thanks to Sue's insulting comments toward *both* of them). It came across as harsh, but he wasn't saying "*you* need to change" he was saying "we *both* need to change" basically, so like... I didn't see it as intentionally hurtful... and then in the end he came around and gave her a real, genuine apology -- which I think is more realistic than having them both be perfect, flawless friends at all times.
