... for not wanting to play video games with bad graphics?

Okay.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Good graphics do not a video game make.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-06 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
The statement "games with bad graphics are unplayable" does not imply "all games with good graphics are good."

(Anonymous) 2011-01-06 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
It implies they're more worth one's time and intrinsically better, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-06 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Between two games with equally high quality gameplay and story, the one with superior graphics is more worth one's time and intrinsically better.

If I said that I found books with common spelling errors were unreadable, you wouldn't assume that I was saying that spelling was the be-all end all of determining a book's quality.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-06 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
You cannot compare spelling to gaming graphics. Spelling does not advance to become more cutting-edge and ~*prettier*~ over time.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-06 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
My point was not that graphics and spelling are 100% analogous, my point was that saying "one aspect of something done poorly enough can make the whole bad" is NOT the same thing as "that aspect of something done well enough makes the whole good." I was responding to a logical fallacy, using an example where the fallacy was more obviously a fallacy. Refusing to play bad looking games is not the same as saying that a game's worth is entirely determined by graphics. The comment "Good graphics do not a video game make" has no place in discussing whether or not bad graphics make a game unplayable in the same way that the comment "Good spelling does not a book make" would have no place in discussing whether or not bad spelling makes a book unreadable.

Eh, a book with bad spelling is more like a game full of glitches.
People who choose games by their graphics are the cancer killing the industry. And I'm saying this as a graphic designer

Thank you. Seriously, this.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-06 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
You're assuming that OP does choose games based on graphics alone. OP said that she or he cannot play ugly games, but that doesn't mean that he or she prefers Gears of War to Okami because Gears has more detailed, processor intensive graphics. Okami is a good example of a game that is not ugly but not graphically intense. A good video game doesn't need processor heavy graphics not to be ugly.

People who insist that it is shallow to factor in the visual side of visual mediums of art and storytelling are promoting mediocrity in those mediums. Certainly it is shallow to only address those aspects of a work, but to let ugly visuals drive you away from a work, or to allow yourself to appreciate beautiful works more than haphazard-looking works is to appreciate true talent in that medium. The best comics, animation, movies, and books all LOOK GOOD as well as having great stories.

ironic that you post this, you're the shallowest commenter on here
