FF7 is definitely ugly though. The art direction for that game is fucking terrible.

There are well-designed games from that era and earlier, however, and a blanket condemnation of all old school games is hella immature.

I don't see how this is bad. It's just your preference. You have a preference for games with good graphics. You may be missing out on some great stories or gameplay, but honestly, as long as you're not saying no one else can enjoy older games because of their graphics? I really don't see how this is a problem.

You're probably missing out....then again, unless you're a hardcore gamer, it would take you years o even play all those classic games. I have a backlog the size of Mount Everest.

[identity profile] vivi314.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing wrong with not liking graphics that aren't your taste IMO. I...don't think my input is that valid considering that I'm not very big on video gaming, but isn't a part of a gaming experience enjoying the graphics? Sure, gameplay is more important, but honestly nothing wrong with preferring better graphics :V I'm not sure Old school= always bad graphics-wise though

You're missing out on some good stuff then, my friend.

[identity profile] phoeliac.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
In regards to the secret, not playing games with graphics you don't like is your perogative, OP. Your example, however, has characters and a story that are worth a few dodgy graphics. (As far as I recall, I mean. I haven't played it in years.)

[identity profile] dar-actually.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Excuse me, but at the time that shit was next-gen.
Ugh. It's like people who won't watch Citizen Kane because it's in black and white.

Sort of agree- I play plenty of games that have outdated/nonexistent graphics, but there are some that are just flat out too ugly. The image in your secret made me cringe a little.

To be fair FF7 hasn't aged well visually. Most early 3D games haven't. You're still being a superficial fool though. Get over yourself.

[identity profile] cephiedvariable.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
What even

Secret for a good reason, dude. Old games are beautiful. What they lack in pixels, they make up for in style, in atmosphere, in lighting, in the beauty of their overall artistic design. So many new games are just brown brown brown brown, broken buildings, gritty landscape. Show me something like the camera work in Metal Gear Solid or the atmosphere of the original Silent Hill or the colours in Chrono Chross or goddamn everything about Vagarant Story and maybe I'll be impressed. And don't even get me started on sprites. Haven't you seen goddamn Atma Weapon?

I think some new games are starting to catch on. Mass Effect 2 especially went that extra mile, rather than simply relying on the well rendered models.

Blah blah blah I'm an elitist snob whatever. Your opinion is bad.

Are you calling Reno ugly?

But seriously, you're missing out. There are a TON of older Playstation games with very solid gameplay. FFVII's mechanics are really simple, but its battle system is still my favorite out of any RPG.

If nothing else, it might be worth it for you to emulate some old games to just try them and see how you feel. The graphics DO get in the way of gameplay for me in some games, though. (like Jet Moto where I can't even figure out what the hell I'm looking at...) But idk... It's kind of a shame if you feel that way.

[identity profile] leafish.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
omg it doesn't even look that bad :T

Seriously. Just pretend you're playing a homebrew PSP game on a big screen or something

Crap. Sometimes I pick up my old gameboy games for kicks and giggles. I wouldn't change a thing about them, graphics and all.

That image you used? Honestly, it doesn't look so bad, and I've never played FF on anything but gameboy/ds...

If the story is good, I think the graphics don't matter (for better or for worse.)

Just my opinion...

[identity profile] zombie-virus.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
You're doing it very, very wrong, my friend.

[identity profile] asylumiss.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Does this include 2D games or is it 3D only? Either way guess that means you'll be avoiding a lot of Playstation games lol

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
You kids and your damn graphics whoring. Play games because they're fun and got good story, good graphics or not. I still play Wolfenstein 3D, not because it's pretty but because it's fun.

Not adding to the old school versus new school debate, both schools have their ups and downs. But don't knock one until you at least try them.

[identity profile] forever-alone.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
So cringe while you play. You may find that you'll forget to keep cringing if/when the story and characters and gameplay start pulling you in. I can understand being put off by something you find ugly, but if you don't even try to get over that you're doing yourself a disservice IMO. There are plenty of great and fun games that aren't so pretty.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I won't play any PS1 games and a fair number of PS2 games because the aliasing drives me CRAZY and actually gives me a headache after awhile. I won't touch anything between Super Nintendo and late PS2 with a ten-foot pole.

My first thought when I just started playing Ocarina of Time for the first time in several years:

"Boy. Sixty-four graphics haven't aged well."

The moment I finish the game, I'm watching the goddamned ending with tears on my eyes, touched the same way The Lord of the Rings did.

Just give them a chance, mate. Eventually, you'll hardly notice the graphics and visuals, and you'll just focus on the story. Besides, sometimes the limitations of visuals can be part of their aesthetic nature.
