What even

Secret for a good reason, dude. Old games are beautiful. What they lack in pixels, they make up for in style, in atmosphere, in lighting, in the beauty of their overall artistic design. So many new games are just brown brown brown brown, broken buildings, gritty landscape. Show me something like the camera work in Metal Gear Solid or the atmosphere of the original Silent Hill or the colours in Chrono Chross or goddamn everything about Vagarant Story and maybe I'll be impressed. And don't even get me started on sprites. Haven't you seen goddamn Atma Weapon?

I think some new games are starting to catch on. Mass Effect 2 especially went that extra mile, rather than simply relying on the well rendered models.

Blah blah blah I'm an elitist snob whatever. Your opinion is bad.

"Your opinion is bad."
... are you fucking kidding me?

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I think she's mocking herself with that bit.

[identity profile] cephiedvariable.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much. "Your opinion is bad and you should feel bad" ect. ect.

[identity profile] cephiedvariable.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I am fucking kidding you.

Man, don't take it so seriously. It's just fandom secrets. We're arguing about video game graphics. o_O

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this anon is the same one that's been jumping all up and down the thread getting indignant.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I never understood anyone feeling smug about liking old video games...It's like liking oldies' music. It's a matter of taste and IMO they're free to play according to their preferences; and I've seen the "but it was so much better before!" argument so many times that I sincerely doubt of its validity. Sure, you're right about old games having a certain charm and things some new ones don't but that doesn't mean that the things the old games are lacking are any less important to some people compared to what the new ones may not have anymore. Sorry for not making much sense, but yeah. I don't quite get your point. /shrug

[identity profile] cephiedvariable.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I should clarify a bit. I wasn't saying "it was better before", just that in terms of graphics there was a certain forced innovation in older games that newer games don't really have to take into consideration. The same thing happens every time we shift up a generation- you find lots of interesting graphics at the beginning of a generations, and lots of gorgeous ones at the end. Sludge in the middle.

It's a matter of preference and I don't really care what they do, I just think that their method of judging whether or not the graphics are good is really shallow and I suppose, in the end, that's their loss.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think the themes and plots and soforth of video games have changed as drastically as in music, though. There are, say, electronic samples and things now, but nobody seriously refuses to listen to acoustic guitar music*. It's not much of a simile.

*my faith in humanity may be too high here, record labels who reject the Beatles aside

[identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
CHRONO CROSS FUCK YEAH. The landscapes and music for that game are so beautiful that I forget the old sprites are even there. And also: about a truckload of characters all with unique art and movesets. That game is amazing.

[identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
...I played it before Chrono Trigger, if that makes you feel any better. I didn't realize what horribleness was really going on.

(That's probably why the graphics and backgrounds made such an impression on me when I first played it - I didn't know what the hell was going on for big chunks of the plot.)

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, don't worry, NOBODY knows what's going on for huge hunks of the plot. Those who claim to are lying.

The backgrounds were indeed beautiful, and the music was one of the best video game soundtracks ever. The battle system and the characters and um, everything else...

well, it takes all kinds to make a world, I guess.

[identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually enjoyed the battle system and the huge character roster. They took a lot of getting used to, but they were just such a break from what most of the other JRPGs I'd been playing did (the largely element-based system, the four-person party, etc), and I liked going back in the New Game+ and finding the characters and subplots I'd missed the first time around. It gave it a lot of replay value for me.

I can see how it wouldn't be for everyone, though. Going back now that I'm used to more streamlined systems that still manage to be different, it would probably frustrate me too.

[identity profile] cephiedvariable.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahaha, I've never actually finished Chrono Cross for those very "um" reasons (or even, like, gotten meaningfully far in the plot).

But boy golly howdy it's a pretty thing~
