As a person whose country experienced communism, I'm used to government arresting dissidents on false charges. If you compare pissing off the government to a simple excuse, you're very naive.

What's your point? The actual rate of false accusations is absolutely miniscule (not the least because, in the American justice system at least, the process for pressing any sexual assault charges whatsoever is frequently traumatic); there's no motivation to bring them up except to cast doubt on every victim accusing someone of rape. It goes back to ASSUMING the victims are lying.

Pissing off a Communist government and being arrested on trumped up charges is very different from pissing off a couple of capitalist governments who decide to press the rape charges that already existed.

What part of "the charges had been brought up months before this whole brouhaha" do people find hard to understand?

I don't think that anon was talking about Assange specifically. Half this thread isn't. They're just arguing with meran about the idiotic generalizations they're making, that every rape victim is never, ever lying.

Point taken-- but in this specific situation "He pissed off the government" feels like rape apologism. The governments he pissed off haven't disappeared Assange. They've resurrected charges that were, like most rape accusations, quietly shoved away into a corner.

A lot of people are less than perfectly informed about the facts, I agree. That's still no reason to start calling them misogynists or telling them that they're assuming the women are lying, when all they're saying is that there is a possibility that the accusations are false. Nobody in this thread has outright called the women liars.

Well... actually, I think there HAS been a lot of assumption in this thread that the women are lying. And if people can't be bothered to look up the facts before spouting off about how they think the women are liars... ie, if their first instinct is "bitches are whores, powerful white man is innocent", without even looking at a single fact of the case beyond the fact that the bitches have vaginas and he has a penis... if they're actually willing to say FALSE things about the case in defense of this position... yeah, I'm comfortable enough calling that misogyny.
