I think you're reading it wrong... nobody is saying that writing porn is wrong, just complaining about how much of it is porn compared to gen or whatever. Whenever I hear people whine fandom porn, it's about how much there is, not that there is any at all. In the same lines as people complaining that a ship is "too popular" but that doesn't mean liking that ship is wrong.

I mean, unless you're writing porn of like 13 year olds but that's a whole other ballgame.

I really don't get the "in it for the porn" argument. Because someone happens to enjoy a lot of porn in the fandom suddenly that's all they're there for? People aren't allowed to join a fandom of something because they want porn? Personally for me most canon stuff DOES give me all the gen/fluff I could want, so when I go to the fandom I want porn, a lot of it, vanilla to kinky as all hell. Porn is something you can't find canonically in a lot of fandoms, is it any surprise there's a lot of it fannishly?

I don't get why that's wrong and never will.

I think people who say it imply that you don't really care what fandom or character it is as long as there is porn of it, or as long as they look like your type, whatever. It's the same argument as "you don't want to spend time with me, all you want is to fuck me and then you leave".
That is, that the interest porn lovers have in their canon is extremely shallow, or they look down on canon thinking porn is the only thing it;s worth.

I have to be honest here, when it comes to fanfiction, all I read is the smut. I find everything else uninteresting and feel like I should really be doing something more productive.

Not that I shouldn't be doing something productive instead of reading smut, but it bothers me less ;].

Well sometimes I only check the fandom for porn, It's not like I'm this incredible sex fiend who lives off porn or something. Sometimes you just want porn for those characters. Seriously you don't need to be this "deep" person who only reads gen fic and talks about the plot or w/e to be a "good" fan. If you're taking this shit too seriously then get out of the fandom and learn have to have fun

I'm one of those people who say "not all fans are there for the porn". Because yeah. If porn is the only thing about the fandom worthy mentioning, then it's not a very interesting fandom. And I wouldn't want to give people that impression. Because it would be like "hey have you read Romeo and Juliette? that kiss scene is really fap-worthy, isn't it?"
Sure erotica has its place. It can be art. But for the most part, fandom erotica is as primitive and silly as a porn movie you can find on the net for free. I feel our fandom has a little more class than xxxwhorepussy.com
Give me well written, beautiful erotica that's an art form, and I'll be happy to present it to the eyes of the multifandom crowd. But bad!porn? Lolno.

Don't feel bad for wanting to write porn for your fandom. Don't let the few haters who deride fans who write it/love it make you feel badly.

I honestly don't know why people can't keep their fucking opinions to themselves sometimes. You don't like porn? Fine. Don't insult those of us who do. You think people who don't like porn are prudes? Maybe you should keep that opinion to yourself, because it's insulting to someone looking for genfic and who finds nothing but smut everywhere they look.

I mean, seriously. Fandoms have a lot to learn with repsect to personal tastes. It's not cool to insult someone on either side.

Furthermore, ignore anyone who says "XYZ gives this fandom a bad name." Who gives a shit about the fandom's "name" or reputation? Enjoy it for what you like about it, and shut the hell up about everything else.

I read and write porn for my fandom(s), but I realize it's not the be-all and end-all to fandom like some people think it is (this attitude DRIVES ME NUTS, since, while I like fucking, I also like exploring character/plot as well). So I kind of sympathize with you there.

I feel that way sometimes, only I really am in it mostly for the porn. :|

There are some good gen fics (or just non-smutty shippy fics) I've read, but I usually don't have the patience for them even if they're well-written. Even if the canon is, say, a book series and I loved reading all of it, for some reason I just don't have much of an attention span when reading fanfic.

When I say "there are some fans not in it for the porn!" what I mean is I don't write porn. Nothing at all wrong with people that do, but I hate it when people hear I write fanfic and assume that it's only porn. Plus, I write ships that aren't necessarily popular, and I want to assure gen readers or people who aren't into explicit slash that hey, there's a story that's not sex here.

It's not a matter of superiority for me- it's a matter of being clear about the content against expectations.

(Because believe me, if you read my stuff looking for the porn, you're going to be disappointed. The porn I do write ends up angsty or incredibly silly, and frankly, I'm not all that great at writing it.)

I'm pretty sure the reason people say that is because some fans are just in it for the porn. And usually, those are also the people who are only in it for the pretty, and shipping just becomes a matter of which two characters are hottest with each other.

Me, I don't care for porn. But I'm in enough fandoms to know that people can, in fact, like porn and also like other aspects of fandom. When people are just in a fandom for porn, it's a little...I dunno, insulting...or disheartening maybe. Like: "So, anyone wanna talk about the implications of that scene when this happened?" "Nah, but here's some very OOC AU porn because we ran out of things to do with the characters in canon!"
...

Then you just start to feel sad.

^^;; I know that, at least in my main fandom, people tend to say that because it's one of the main things bashers will toss out there. It's not intended to say 'We don't like porn!' so much as 'We like other aspects too! Not *just* the porn!'

I like well-written fic, whether gen or pr0n. The problem seems to be that I do *gasp* have pr0n fic. My friend seems to think I'm a sex fiend or something. It's annoying, especially since she thinks it's a valid reason to look down on fanficcing.

I know some people are just frustrated with the amount of pr0n in fandom, but from experience, they do use it as a reason to say 'lol fandom's batshit.' It's annoying at best :/.
