If you were doing everything you could to "get" a celebrity, you'd be a stalker. So, don't feel bad about yourself, anon. Feel sane.

I don't get why people feel awkward liking celebrities or fictional characters. I mean, are you supposed to turn off your sexuality so you don't become attracted to people who are unattainable? It just seems normal to me.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

Plus liking a celebrity isn't much different to liking a fictional character, since we don't tend to actually know them in any way, and our crush is mostly a mixture of physical attraction and projection. We make up fictional versions of the celebrities in our heads, so we can crush on them. If we have active and extensive sex fantasies about meeting them and all that, at least.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously.

I remember a time several years ago when I was watching TV with some people, and an actor came on or something. I'm not sure exactly how the conversation went, but someone said something like "He is so hot!", and the other person replied by claiming she doesn't understands why anyone would be attracted to someone they don't know in real life, or how it's a waste of time to like a celebrity instead of having a real boyfriend, or something along those lines. Hearing that attitude makes me feel kinda "meh".

[identity profile] aaskew.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
based on that logic, she probably wouldn't understand why gay people in homophobic environments insist on being attracted to people of the same sex.

I don't know any body who expects for you to go out and get the celebrity you are crushing on, unless they are, as mentioned above, a stalker. Most people view celebrities as only a pinch more attainable than fictional characters.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
What are you waiting for? Go get the bastard. (But don't be creepy.)

Ofc you should probably try and get to know them first.

[identity profile] lesbido.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Celebrities aren't really attainable either.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
They are to some of us, bb.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. You're hanging out on FS because of your jumpin' social life.

[identity profile] rubykatewriting.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I very nearly spewed my Mike's Hard Light Cranberry Lemonade. I take my Mike's Hard Light Cranberry Lemonade very seriously, but it would have totes been worth it for this comment.

Four for you, Coco.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'll be here all week! Hand me one of those lemonades.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-17 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't need a "jumpin' social life" to meet celebrities if you work in LA, bb.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I live in Bristol. That makes me a racecar driver!

(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I simply draw the line somewhere else - celebrities who live on a different fucking continent than me are pretty much fictional characters to me, and thus their public persona is fair game for fantasy (and I reckon they do take that into account, to a certain extent. Hence the existence of a public persona in the first place).

That'd change if I ever met them, of course. Which is why I rather hope I don't ;)

(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
There's nothing wrong with having crushes on unattainable-yet-real people, anon. Everyone has fantasies! It's not very different from having crushes on fictional characters, IMO.
Don't feel bad about it, unless the celebrity in question is all you think about, you're unable to care about anything else, etc. Then you might have a problem.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't be so harsh on yourself! Unless you're letting it utterly consume your life or something, crushes are harmless and fun; doesn't matter if they're fictional or famous or whatever. Just, you know, everything in moderation. Beyond that, it's all good.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW THAT FEELING! Kinda.

With fictional characters, I never got that creepy "What would this person think if they knew I was having these thoughts about them?" feeling. I never think "If I were to somehow meet this person, would they hate me?" I never have to think "I hope I never become so obsessed that I take it to creepy levels." It feels so much more innocent.

(However, celebrity or not, "doing everything you can" to get with someone is....a bit creepy. I just have to say, I hope you don't have that mindset towards people you know in real life.)

[identity profile] bloodrivendream.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
To me it is practically the same. Because the celebrity is usually nearly as unattainable as the fictional character.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-17 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I understand how you feel. I have no problem admitting when I have a "comic book" crush, but if I admit to liking a character portrayed by a real actor, I worry to extremes. I don't want to come across like secrets #41 and 42...

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, so someone being in unrequited love with someone they know in Real Life, but who wasn't interested in that sort of a relationship with them, would make them a "loser"? WTF?

(Anonymous) 2011-01-17 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Celebrities are just as unobtainable (assuming you're an average person who isn't connected in any way to a place where said celebrity lives or works) so I don't see having a crush on one as a problem.

This actually makes me think of something that bugs me when people say it... People say something like, "Oh, such and such celebrity is so hot... too bad they're gay." And it's like... what? What does that have to do with anything? Even if they weren't gay you still wouldn't be able to get with them.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-17 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my no. You are doing it right. 41, by contrast, is doing it horribly, horribly wrong. Stay on target, Blue Leader. Stay on target.
