I don't find it weird if people just like to keep their stuff locked. I do find it a bit weird if people promote a fic or something, and then you get there and it's like "join the comm to read!" What's the point? Usually in that situation anyone can join the comm to read, so it's not really filtering people out, but it is providing another step that is probably going to discourage me from reading the fic or looking at the icons or whatever.

Yeah, promoting locked entries is fucking annoying. If someone just prefers to keep their fandom ramblings locked though, that's a different matter.

This. I have no problem with people locking whatever the hell they want to, but when the post links to and promote locked entries? Crazy annoying.

Yeah, this. It's so annoying when people promote like that. It's even more annoying when they refuse to update fics until they get so many members/watchers/etc. I don't care if I love the fic and they're one person away from their goal. I'm not joining that shit...

The reason it doesn't make sense to me is that if people use their icons, which would be the point of making them, other people not in the community can still take them when they see people use them. I get half my icons browsing through other people's userpics. So yeah...I just don't see a point other than as a gimmick to get followers to their community.

I'm with you. I also wish others wouldn't rec stuff that's f-locked. I can't tell you how many times I've seen something on a rec list only to be denied access because it's f-locked. If something is locked, don't put it on a open rec list.
