What if you combine them? What if you just prefer your entire LJ to be locked, without bothering to sort what is and isn't?

Oh, get the fuck over yourself. I lock my fandom entries and fic because it's none of my coworkers/RL friend's business what I do as a personal hobby. I'm not willing to risk my well paid professional career because I dabble in fandom.

Some of us are just private people, anon.

And frankly, I wouldn't want anyone from my RL to discover my fanfic links or excessive girlcrushing on Pam Beesly.

THIS.

If you f-lock your icons/fanfiction/fanart? I don't care how pretty the previews are, or how interesting the fic is, I'm not joining your community/friending you just to see it.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-16 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't find it weird if people just like to keep their stuff locked. I do find it a bit weird if people promote a fic or something, and then you get there and it's like "join the comm to read!" What's the point? Usually in that situation anyone can join the comm to read, so it's not really filtering people out, but it is providing another step that is probably going to discourage me from reading the fic or looking at the icons or whatever.

LOL. No dice.
My entire LJ is f-locked. I wouldn't want to sort out what gets a lock and what doesn't, I like knowing who can read it, and considering the amount of people enjoying jumping on each other for unorthodox ideas - I definitely won't be unlocking it anytime soon. (Doesn't mean I love adding people to my friends list though, I just want to get a hunch. Or two.)

I don't mind when people lock fanfic/fanart to their journals, only when they lock it and then promote it in a community. I know people who only post fic to their journal and not to the comms, and lock it, and at least then you can tell it's not a desperate grab to get friends.

Also, sometimes people have reasons. I know I've locked a fanart entry before because it was getting trolled, and I know others in my fandom who have done that for that reason. Plus, sometimes people want to discuss a fandom opinion that is rather controversial or rude and don't want to get flamed, so they lock the entry.

[identity profile] netbug009.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh. I'm just usually too lazy to not flock everything, unless I have something I intentionally want to share, like when I'm gonna link to it from a comm or something.

[identity profile] cindyisboring.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't bother to join the community or friend the LJ. I either take the icons in the previews or move onto the next person who has public posts.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh anon, I have an abusive ex who likes to stalk me and my things online. I f-lock my posts so that I know he can't see anything I write. Even fandom, if he sees me liking something new suddenly he's obsessed with it. It's disturbing and makes me uncomfortable.

Only my closest friends know. Some people have reasons for f-locking their posts that you can't possibly know about. Try not to be so close-minded.

Yeah well, it's not all about you.

I'm one of the ones who does occasionally f-lock fandom stuff. It's not because I, like, secretly hate people who look at my LJ or anything. Or because I enjoy making people jump through hoops.

I do it to protect myself. Maybe the entry is NC-17, and I don't want my el-jay TOS'ed because someone's 12 year old darling got traumatized by porn.

Sometimes I'm all, "You know what? The people on my f-list are cool and I like their opinion," so I release a chapter of whatever I'm working on a bit early, just for them and f-lock it. It's like our little secret.

I also do writing memes and unless I f-lock it, I'll become overwhelmed by responses. I'll admit, that's pure laziness on my part.

My RL has been a pain in the ass recently and I bitch about it constantly, then add some fandom stuff at the end because I'm not anal enough to make two entries for two different subjects. Those get f-locked.

I don't know who you're talking about, but those are my personal reasons why I hide some of my posts. Hope it helps.

To be fair, some people flock their fandom stuff to avoid harassment/trolling from people outside the fandom. I've seen this happen more than once; someone will go HAW HAW LOOK WUT I FOUND IT'S X-RATED POKEMON FIC (or whatever) LET'S ALL MOCK/TROLL THEM UNTIL WE FIND SOMETHING NEW TO TROLL/MOCK/WHATEVER.

Sometimes there are valid reasons for flocking, anon.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's necessarily elitism. There's obviously other reasons to lock them as others have already stated. The only thing I would prefer is if they posted in a locked, personal community. Only so it would be fair to other private people who don't want their own private entries read by someone they only wish to watch for fanwork.

Oh well, I don't quite see the big deal of anyone wanting to lock anything (work, personal, etc.) for whatever reason, including elitism.

[identity profile] thisissirius.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
i lock fandom stuff because it's either combined with personal stuff or it's something that i don't want the whole of the fandom/eljay knowing about it. it doesn't make me elitist just because i want to keep something private amongst my flist.

[identity profile] littleworkerbee.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I don't have a major issue with it. I agree with communities who make it a rule that you can't post stuff that's linked to locked entries, though. I mean further down the line you can do whatever you want, but I hate it when I click a link on my flist only to find out I can't actually view the content.

Dude, I lock everything by default. I've had a lot of trouble with people I knew IRL bothering me about every little thing I posted. We're talking about the sort that thought it was coolsies to go tell my mom about "omggggg your child is [doing whatever activity]!!!" and made my life difficult. I mean sure, my mom took it as them being grudgewanky idiots, but it was still fuckery. ffffff HIGH SCHOOL WAS YEARS AGO.

To add, though, I have a separate fic journal, if that's the sort of 'fandom' stuff you're talking about.

Meh, people can lock what they want. Most of my lj entries from before I disappeared off the net a couple years ago are even private locked now, because of some of the shit that was going on at the time is stuff I don't want someone new browsing through my lj to find.

What irritates me is when they link to the entry in a comm : /

[identity profile] sensualcoco.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
People can lock their stuff all they want. But what I hate is clicking a link to someone's work only to find out it's locked.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-17 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
As long as they don't advertise those f-locked entries in communities, I have no problem. I don't care. If I'm their friend I'll read them, if I'm not I won't know about them.

People who f-lock entries that they then pimp out in communities suck. I refuse to friend a person just to read their damn fic. If they are that paranoid about the wrong people reading, post it on the community and then f-lock it there.

[identity profile] iiiskaaa.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
It only really annoys me when they pimp their flocked content on communities, particularly when they do it on communities that have a rule against linking to locked posts.

[identity profile] agentak.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
What's even worse is when they make a post on a community for that fandom going "Hey guys come check out this awesome post!" and then linked to it even though it's locked. I seriously wish people were banned for that....

[identity profile] hogglebee.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I f-locked my entries because my mum found my femslash smut...

That was an awkward conversation.
