Oh, get the fuck over yourself. I lock my fandom entries and fic because it's none of my coworkers/RL friend's business what I do as a personal hobby. I'm not willing to risk my well paid professional career because I dabble in fandom.

Ok and how does that help you? Some random person from fandom asks to friend you, and so you friend them and they see your stuff... unless you run background checks on every single person you allow to see your fanworks?

On those grounds it could equally be argued that it's pointless for anyone ever to lock anything if they ever intend to friend anyone.

If I want to lock my ramblings about fandom, that's my business and no one else's. Get the fuck over it.

I find the "I'm a private person" reason to be perfectly reasonable.

The "I don't want anyone I know to find it" reason is somewhat less reasonable because if you friend anyone to show it to them, there's a risk of it spreading around, or that friend being someone you know, unless you plan to background check every single one

Personally I take a good look at the LJs of people who friend me before I add them back. I think I'd notice if they were someone I knew in real life. That's not to say someone couldn't sneak a good sockpuppet past me if they were really trying, but I can't imagine anyone bothering.

I'd agree that anyone on the internet should know that anything they write on the internet could get spread around though. Nothing's as private as we'd often like to think.

And do you have your real name or workplace and stuff on your LJ? I sure as hell don't. There's no way that anyone that knew me offline would be able to find out who I am by my LJ. I'm just saying, there's no way to make sure RL people don't read your stuff, and what would you even say if one found you and asked to be let in? 'Sorry but I know you IRL'? 'Sorry but I'm not comfortable with you in particular reading my fic even though all these other people I've friended are ok'? 'Sorry but no and I won't even tell you why'?

not the anon above, but I just don't friend people I know in real life on lj and I just tell them that *shrugs*

Why the crap would you put your personal info on your LJ if you use that name for stuff you don't want RL people to know about? That's just asking someone to google you and get an eyefull.
You do realize that comments to other people's entries occasionally show up in Google searches. And it's an easy thing to click on your f-list and figure out what your friends are into and know what a weeaboo (or whatever) you are from that.

This. So much this. If you're that concerned about keeping RL/fandom separate make a separate account entirely for your fic.

That's just dandy unless you forget and reply to an RL friend's post from your fandom LJ. Said RL friends usually figure it out pretty quickly if your fandom LJ isn't f-locked. Hell, they might figure it out anyway, but at least they wouldn't be able to see any really incriminating evidence.

The OP comes off as if s/he's entitled to see what's in anyone's fandom journal. Not everyone feels that way and thus, they lock their journals. OP should get over it.

If someone from RL finds out that I am in fandom (which would be by chance, since my comm membership list is hidden and I have an undisclosed penname and email and I do not talk about fandom in RL) and wants SO BADLY to find out if I happen to have a fandom filter on LJ and goes to the trouble of creating a dummy journal and trying to friend me? Fine. They can read my crappy fic.

The odds of this happening? Non-existent. I filter stuff so RL friends and coworkers don't stumble across it by accident, just by looking at my LJ. My policy is if I wouldn't show it to my boss and my grandmother, it is not public. Not to mention, I don't go around making enemies who want to make my life miserable and thus am not particularly concerned about being trolled in real life; it is just a protection against accidental discovery. This may be a shocking revelation for you, but it is common practice in the adult professional world to keep your fandom things on the QT. Nobody at work google-stalks you to find it. They don't give a shit unless you make them see it by putting it somewhere public and obvious.

2 solutions:

1) have a fandom journal under a different name and don't attach your real name or personal info to it. That will keep the real life people off your back. Many, many people keep separate fandom and regular journals.

2) Post fandom stuff to the communities rather than linking to your journal. That way you get your audience without forcing them to friend you. You can then take the second step of friends locking it to the community. No one outside the community will even know it exists.

The worst way to deal with it is to pimp things out then make sure people need to friend your journal to see it. In addition to being annoying to community members, it would be easy for RL snoops to simply friend your journal and be mistaken for someone from fandom.
