Because no one lives in a vacuum and quite often private charities aren't nearly widespread or effective enough to help everyone stay fed, clothed or otherwise keep a roof over their heads. Because one day, the person who is down and out and facing bankruptcy from a medical bill or trying to decide whether or not to pay the heating bill or buy enough food for the month might be you or a friend or a family member.

Further, paying into social programs and other safety nets means a healthier overall nation and economy. People who have a roof over their heads, are getting enough food for their family to eat and aren't worrying about how they're going to afford their next doctor appointment are less likely to turn to crime. People with an education are more productive members of the workforce. Healthy people and preventive care makes for a healthier population and lower overall health care costs.

People contribute because we're all part of society and no one, not even the super-wealthy, got where they were without help from society. Society educated them, gave them the tools they needed and provides the very framework and security they need to remain wealthy.

Although your basic argument is unsound in of itself: do you think poor people don't work hard?
