Forcing people to rely on private charity is forcing them to beg. It gives them no right to the basic means of survival, no dignity, no stability. Private charity can be ripped away from you at any moment, or force you to accept its conditions in order to get aid (convert to a church, for example). Private charity is in no way an adequate substitute for a social security net.

Agreed. Almost all private charity in the US is faith-based. It's not charity; they're buying your allegiance to the church. You become a mindless zombie to their violent and disgusting Bronze Age fairy tale, and they give you some donated canned food.

Not the most equitable trade in the world, I think.

Well, not all faith-based charities are like that. The clinic I used to go to in Nashville was operated by Catholic Charities and even though my husband put down "Jewish" where it said "religion" on the forms they provided, he always received the same treatment as everyone else and was never turned away. Nobody proselytized to us and the closest thing there was to any sort of conversion were some religious pamphlets lying around in the waiting room that anyone could take if they wanted to.

Catholic Charities is one of the few good ones, but everyone seems to know that, and thus they're always full up and stretched to the breaking point!

The main one I have experience with--the Salvation Army--is absolutely NOT a good one. A friend of mine had to stay in the YMCA men's shelter in Oklahoma once; in order to keep his bed for longer than one night, he was REQUIRED to attend church and REQUIRED to convert to Christianity (he's a Buddhist, btw).

Seriously? The fucking Salvation Army?

Well I won't be tossing spare quarters in the bucket during the holidays anymore.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-01-22 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I used to donate every month, plus I was a bell-ringer every holiday season (not one of the paid ones), until I found out the S.A. attitude toward helping gay people. It was rather saddening, since I liked the organization in the first place because I hadn't thought it was hung up on religious requirements despite its name.

Ugh, yes. Salvation Army is terrible.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-22 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
When you stop and think about it, the name is kind of a dead giveaway.

[identity profile] cephiedvariable.livejournal.com 2011-01-22 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
And they don't always treat their employees the best either. :P One of my close friend's parents used to be Salvation Army and the church left them out in the cold for some really petty reasons (they were also unreasonable about her mother's cancer, getting impatient about how going to chemo interfered with her work. What?)
