Surely we're forgetting here that liberal =/= left wing? I'm a socialist, not a liberal. FWIW I agree with you, a range of differing viewpoints (no matter how much I personally disagree with libertarianism) is important for society, and it's wrong for Democrats/those on the left to stop this. Personally I find that US-based 'liberals' are usually a lot less liberal than they like to think (speaking as a UK national).

Huzzah, socialism!

And yeah, as a socialist in the US, there really isn't anyone here to represent me. Mealy-mouthed Democrats included.

There's almost no one to politically represent UK socialists, either, since Labour gave up being socialists years ago. :(

[identity profile] dragoon1940.livejournal.com 2011-01-21 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, the international socialist movement had it's beating heart ripped out by World War I and then Stalinism sort of finished it off.

Still, we can dream of one day having representation. :(

The Labour Party at least proclaimed socialist ideals until the Blair era, in the UK. The whole setting up of the welfare state and the NHS after WWII was pretty socialist. Sadly the country has become frighteningly right-wing in recent years, complete with blaming people with disabilities for the country's economic problems. :(

I followed that whole SNAFU regarding your university and health system over there. Sounds like a damn mess at the moment.

Hope things improve for you guys over there. Doubt there's any light at the end of the tunnel in the U.S. at the moment. Do your best to fight it. I've grown up here and I'm coming damn close to just vacating the country entirely.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-21 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It is, it seriously is. At least the university fees thing gets a lot of media attention. Too few people even know about the severity of the cuts they're making to benefits and services for people with disabilities. It's a frightening time.

And thanks. Let's hope together that things improve for the world!

Actually I think the socialists within Labour are gaining ground once again - don't forget, we have Ed Balls for Shadow Chancellor now who is certainly the most economically left-wing one we've had in ages. Saying that, I'm a Labour member so it's in my interests to be optimistic :)

(Anonymous) 2011-01-21 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I hope you're right. I'll believe it when I see him actively and vocally opposing the cuts to DLA, mobility allowance, and all the rest of it.

Don't get me wrong, I prefer Labour over the Tories a million, billion times. I hope your optimism turns out to be closer to reality than my cynicism.

[identity profile] manatees.livejournal.com 2011-01-22 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
But he has done, at the leadership hustings! When Andy Burnham was still Health Secretary (and Ed was Schools Secretary) they both supported a national care system for the elderly, for instance, and Ed supports a much fairer graduate tax system for university fee repayments.

I'm a humanities student at a modern university, so don't think I'm not worried about the future! I also have mental health problems so I am very worried about these cuts.
