Yeah, no. Sorry. With certain characters it makes a difference, but the things that make Spider-Man Spider-Man have nothing to do with the fact that he's white. He grew up in a neighborhood, in a city, that has a lot of Black, Latino, Asian, basically a lot of different races. Peter was bullied in High School. Peter was a geek. Peter wears a mask when he's Spider-Man anyway so no one would see his race when he's Spider-Man thus his hero identity would never be connected in that way.

I'll give you that having a black Captain America done with Isaiah Bradley, or a black Iron-Man would be a different experience and create a different character with a different background.

The thing is that they focus way too much on "iconic looks" that were created in the 1940s-1970s, rather than the character. It's usually more true for female characters in the comic book movies and I'm not saying Nick Fury as Sam L Jackson doesn't irk me (but that's more because the comic creators of that verse only made him look like Sam L Jackson, because they thought it would be funny and I love Samuel L Jackson, but he can't play anything other than Samuel L Jackson and that's not Nick Fury).

To an extent it still would though. I can't speak about where Spider-Man is placed, but I know that where I live? Minorities still face problems that whites don't, even if they live in the exact same neighborhood. So, if they do change change his race, they would - or at least should - change the background enough to accommodate the changes in experience. While, yes, he does wear a mask, that doesn't mean that the experiences he grew up with, or had when he wasn't masked wouldn't change.

That said, they wouldn't have to completely change his character either - he could still be a geek, and the fact that gets him bullied probably wouldn't change. But there would be some other things that should probably be changed, since - as another poster said, there are cultural differences, and societal pressures that do change depending on race.

Are you kidding me? Are you really comparing the experiences of white geeks to black geeks? It is infinitely harder to be a black geek than a white geek, because of what the culture values. The same way it is infinitely easier to be an asian geek because of what the culture values. Black geeks get stared at. People don't think black geeks exist.

It is goddamned different.
