I don't know about BSG, so I don't know how to answer you other than for me it would depend heavily on how they did it, what their situation was, what sort of time and place and setting they lived in...

It seems not to have to do with any present or past representation of Earth, being set in the future, though? So less real history would come into play with that.

I'm pretty sure Nick Fury isn't a historical figure, either. Except maybe to Stan Lee. ;-)

I wasn't talking about Nick Fury, I was addressing turning white characters black.

Most of Marvel is based on a timeline that resembles past and present Earth, complete with its wars, its racism, sexism, and other sorts of discrimination that would have an impact on people who grew up in it. Especially in cases such as Captain America. It's really not comparable to a series set in the distant future in space. :\

So you're saying context is the big factor. But this leads me to wonder if that applies across all fields of cosmetic difference; could both sexes expect to be raised and treated exactly the same even in a "colorblind" society (as a ship may be, by your indication)? Wouldn't Starbuck have had different experiences being a girl rather than a boy? (Basic physiology does create disparity in a few ways, physically.) I thought the point of this comment thread was that if you change something basic about a character in the same situation, you end up with a different character because of their influences based on how they've been treated according to their new form.

That is the point of this comment thread, but like I said I don't know anything about BSG aside from that it's a future sci-fi show, so I can't judge the Starbuck character. I was suggesting possible reasons the change might not have been drastic, that's all. In the BSG universe, maybe it's futuristic enough so that a black Starbuck wouldn't be different either, I wouldn't know.

In things like the regular Marvelverse though, it would be.

I suppose that's fair enough. I was just trying to establish the parameters you were referring to for your earlier reply to me. (I still say being a girl is different, though, at least until they find a way to get rid of monthly inconveniences. *G* Nobody wants to think about THAT, but it does have an effect if you don't have the technology to cope with it properly. It doesn't limit what a gal CAN do, but it does create genuine medical problems for how comfortably she can do it, compared to a guy who takes it for granted he'll never have such challenges.)
