This secret is so wrong that I don't even know what to say. I guess I'll start with anythingbutgrey's essay on Angel's character arc (http://anythingbutgrey.livejournal.com/751388.html#cutid1) because it is brilliant and really shows what a fascinating, dynamic character Angel is.

And I'll end with: When have you ever seen Edward Cullen bounce?

ummmmm.... no, sorry, I can't agree with that.

I've seen all of Angel and all of BtVS, and am far more familiar with Twilight than I want to be, and as a result... yeah, no. Angel has, you know, a personality. And occasionally goofs around. Yeah, he broods a lot, to the point where it gets lampshaded in canon, but frankly, he's got good reason to.

Edward... um, not so much.

Sure, they both have brooding going on, but that's pretty much where it ends, but Angel

-actually has character development
-isn't nearly as clingy/creepy/emo...even as Angelus, at least he's badass.
-actually goes for women with personality.
-is funny
-actually tries to make the world a better place.
-has goals

I almost feel bad for Twilight fans-their fandom is some sort of litmus test of crapiness (but then I remember that series is another knife in the back of feminism and I get over it).

So yeah, clearly false, but there were some suspicious superficial similarities. There's the long period of celibacy followed by the creepy stalking of a high school girl. There's broodiness and watching their stalkee sleep. Buffy couldn't read Angel's mind and Edward couldn't read Bella's mind. They both knocked somebody up when it wasn't supposed to be possible, and both their kids grew up really fast. All the important things are different, but are the things that are the same really that common as vampire tropes?

All there is to say in regards to this, is that Angel was never meant to be thought of as "the perfect ideal man" that Edward supposedly embodies in Twilight. Buffy doesn't worship Angel the way Bella does Edward and it's been emphasised over and over again that without his soul, Angel is very much a sadistic serial killer as a vampire. That means that he doesn't voluntarily fall in love with human high school girls in his natural form. I'm also pretty sure I read a few times on this thread that Angel does in fact have -GASP!- personality and character development even as Angelus.

Maybe if you've only seen the beginning of Buffy season 1? When all of his ~mysteriousness~ was played up and he was little more than the mysterious older vampire with a crush on the younger high school girl.

But after we got to see more of his character, a lot more dimensions started appearing.

It's true that in a superficial manner, Meyers designed Cullen after Angel, and made a craptastic, bootleg version in the looks department, but there's no way in HELL they are similar or the same.

The biggest difference?

Edward Cullen is two dimensional (and I'm being *very* kind here) and Angel is well rounded, entertaining, and he sure as hell never sparkled.

I'm sure Angel's characterization in his titular show completely negates this core similarity, but I've never been able to get past my distaste for the guy to watch it.
