Hang on...since when did only obnoxious 14 years old like Les Miserables. I've never heard that. I love it and I'm 26.

[identity profile] teahound.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

[identity profile] scarletumbrella.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Came down here to write exactly this. What the hell. (Hans/icon ♥ btw!)

[identity profile] ugerchucker.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay, someone recognised it. I love Hans Matheson as Marius.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I do think it's an honestly good show, but there seems to be a bit of a backlash because it is/was so popular? Also, most people who liked the book seem to hate the show deeply (though I liked them both). Maybe I am just hanging out in the wrong circles, though!

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Another anon here chiming in to say that she first saw the show, then read the entire unabridged book, and loves them both.

I'm turning 21 soon.

This. Les Mis is the best. THE BEST.

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think it tends to get lumped in with 80s megamusicals like Phantom because

1. It was part of the British Invasion and Cameron Mackintosh produced it in full megamusical style--exporting replica productions around the globe, etc.
2. It's not written/structured/etc in traditional Broadway style--which isn't to say it's written like an ALW show either, just that it was nontraditional at a time when it felt like Broadway tradition was under attack from British blockbuster musicals.

But (and here I'm biased because I'm hardcore in the fandom for it) I think it's held up way better than most of its brethren. The other usual criticism of megamusicals--that they're all spectacle and lavish design, no substance--is only true insofar as the design is brilliant. But it's far from lavish--when you think about it, the set pretty much consists of the revolve and the barricade/slum and that's IT. It's as spare as you could possibly get, given the requirements of the plot.

And, of course, the score itself--independent of the staging and the super-commercialized way it was produced--stands on its own quite well indeed. :)

IFKR, Les Mis is amazing. I loved it passionately when I was 14 and I still do at 22.

[identity profile] valenciapilgrim.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly! I loved it when I was 16, and I still do at 30! Usually I kind of forget it for a while, and then a song randomly comes up on my ipod and I have to stop everything and listen to the entire soundtrack and sing and gesticulate passionately as I do housework.

A few years ago I was living with my aunt in Chicago, babysitting and looking for jobs. I went to babysit for this hyper-literate liberal upscale suburban household, and three minutes after i met the kids, the six year old boy said "Ask her, Mom!" The mom rolled her eyes and was like "He wants to know if you like this musical called Les Mis..." clearly thinking the odds weren't good that I knew it. I was like "*Know* it??? I LOVE IT!!!!" It was like the best working night of my life. We sang all night - the boy even played some of the songs on a guitar! His four year old sister even knew some of the words too! Those kids were made of WIN.

[identity profile] mcwicca.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG that sounds amazing! Those are some awesome kids.

[identity profile] curlychikk.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe OP is mad bc Nick Jonas was in a production of Les Mis over the summer and clearly he is talentless by default and ruined everything. IDK, I've never heard that either.

[identity profile] kiffie.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
But... Nick Jonas has been doing theatre for YEARS.

Hell, he was also Gavroche years ago, when he was... what? 10? [/nerd]

Yes that's true...but have you seen the 25th Anniversary Concert?

[identity profile] curlychikk.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
What about it? All I know is apparently he wasn't bad.

[identity profile] nusuth.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say he wasn't the same calibre as the other performers which was kinda sad. And his facial expression really annoyed me, but that may just be me. It certainly didn't help that Ramin Karimloo was playing Enjorlas and I'm willing to bet that anyone playing Marius would suffer in comparison.

[identity profile] curlychikk.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't expecting him to be the same calibre, tbh. He is a bit younger than them, and not as experienced. But aside from that, I wasn't expecting anything superb. He has talent, though. I only watched a bit on Youtube and was pleasantly surprised.

[identity profile] nusuth.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounded a lot like a debut role. I mean his voice was OK but he kinda massacred "empty chairs" and his acting was terrible. He may have talent but there was always a "but". Which, ok, can all be worked on, and it would be understandable it he was playing with the regular cast (or even with the tour cast) since playing every night you'd improve fast and raw talent would have time to be trained. But for the 25th anniversary concert? Everyone else was amazing and you'd think that for this one unique show that plays for one night at the O2 and is going to be sold on DVD and will inevitably be compared to the 10th anniversary concert, they'd have tried to cast more experienced people, who could really carry it. (or even beginners that were already doing well. It was obvious that whoever was doing Eponine was going to be really good with a bit more training but that couldn't be said about Nick Jonas.) They KNEW that, under the circumstances, he was going to be compared to Michael Ball so you'd think that they'd cast someone who wouldn't be completely screwed in the comparison process.

Sorry, a bit TL;DR there, but once I'm started on Les Mis...

[identity profile] curlychikk.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, don't worry about it. Yeah, idk much about the musical tbh. I'm not really sure what made them decided to cast him now, it may have been his other commitments, etc. I can't disagree with you that it was probably a bad choice to make, as much as it pains me, lol.

[identity profile] jorockz.livejournal.com 2011-01-25 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
His facial expressions drove me nuts too! I think it was because he is clearly focused on one spot and never looks away from it. I thought that maybe it was helping him focus or something? It kept distracting me during his songs though.

[identity profile] jorockz.livejournal.com 2011-01-25 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
nusuth pretty much said everything I would have said. Unfortunatly, compared to everyone on stage he was clearly the weakest. ( A lot of reviewers thought it might be stunt casting to appeal to Jonas' fans.)

[identity profile] curlychikk.livejournal.com 2011-01-25 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
omg hdu he is perfect and flawless and can do no wrong

Nah. It's a shame though cause he was all ~excited about it.

[identity profile] nusuth.livejournal.com 2011-01-25 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I said the same thing to my mother and she replied "really? because you really think there's one person in that audience that doesn't know this musical by heart?". I mean, I'd understand from a marketing pov if they cast him for the tour (and he wouldn't be the first ex-popstar to sing Marius, either). but it just doesn't make sense for the concert.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. What fucking fourteen-year-old is even mature enough to handle Les Mis? /says the girl who has had the entire musical memorized since she was twelve

[identity profile] 365reasonswhy.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
IKR? Great story, great characters. Maybe it's a little bombastic but it's about the French Revolution, so it should be.
