I don't really know any Disney characters who have religions that have been mentioned or are blatant in their films other than the people from Hunchback and the character you mentioned in your secret.

You can probably assume that the characters from Aladdin are Muslim or Hindu but really, that's all I got.

I believe they were Muslim, considering I can remember the Sultan saying "Praise Allah" at least once, and "Allah forbid you to have any daughters" to Rajah.

Sorry, just felt the need to say a random timbit of information >3>;

Oh, I vaguely remember that bit, but it makes a lot of sense, haha.

"Allah" is an Arabic word that refers to any god and precedes Islam so that doesn't definitely make the Sultan a Muslim

I always though that Aladdin took place in pre-Islamic times since the legend itself does but I guess you could read it either way

Oh, thanks for the information, I didn't know that! :D

Except the first "sultans" weren't until after Islam.

And Aladdin is an English movie, so other than the Islamic usage, there would be no reason to keep "God" in Arabic like that.

Well there's also the magic carpet ride where some guy is building the Sphynx of Giza (which was built thousands of years BCE) so how's that for consistency

I still hold onto my theory that it's pre-Islam because
a) like I said, it's a pre-Islamic folktale
b) the film implies that it's a pretty lawless era and that would also jive with it being pre-Islamic Arabia (since Islam served to create law and order and unite previously warring tribes with one another)

And let's forget that you know, not all Arabs are Muslims and that Arabs who practice other Abrahamic religions use the same word for "God"

The fact that he's called a "sultan" is beside the point, I don't think Disney did enough research to know what a sultan really is or thought that deeply into what religion the characters subscribed to one way or the other, but you can't say for certain that they are Muslims or not.

The folktale isn't pre-Islamic though. It's origins aren't clear, but it's definitely a post-Islamic story. Technically the story takes place in China, but in a weird Islamic China where most of the people are Muslim (probably why the creators just changed it to "Arabia")

And I never got the impression it was "lawless" either, which is why the soldiers are all out and about trying to arrest Aladdin on behalf of the sultan. Criminals don't imply lawlessness. There are no "warring tribes". The whole setting and the architecture are reminiscent very much of the most famous Muslim structure, the Taj Mahal.

And I think that if you know what a "Sultan" is, you probably know enough that its a term with very Muslim origins--not even Arabic, but Muslim through and through.

About the only English speakers who still use "Allah" for God are Muslims. Although Arabic-speaking Christians might use "Allah" when conversing in Arabic, they use "God" when conversing in English, whereas a Muslim would use "Allah" when conversing in both English and Arabic. And you are resort to "creator ignorance" when talking about the title of "Sultan" yet you would claim the American animators are having Arabic pagans talking about "Allah"?

It feels like a very very big stretch. You're free to put anything you want in your headcanon, but I'm not sure why you would want your headcanon to act as if they are all pagan, that is, I am not sure what the story would gain from that type of reading. There's nothing wrong with Muslims.

Judaism is more than just a religion but yeah

[identity profile] accented.livejournal.com 2011-01-25 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Right, sorry. I've been in a bunch of religion-fueled discussions while taking a world religions class and it's kind of been encompassing everything I'm doing lately.
