Maybe it's the area you live in but, an outcast? Really? I have a suspicion you're being a bit over dramatic.

Animal rights activists catch a lot of flack for their beliefs. I've lost supposed friends because of it myself. There's this stereotype about bitchy vegans, but no one ever brings up bitchy omnivores who just have to tell vegans off even if they're not talking about their beliefs or being judgmental.

unfortunately I have the opposite problem. Morons trying to push their 'eat only veggies' bullshit on me or 'hunting is sooooo evil', even though we currently have an over population problem of deer/seals/whatever. Worse then that the 'animal activists' are actually ruining economies and in some places the ecosystems. I agree that animal rights need to be reserved in the 'hey, stop eating all the baby sea turtles, if you don't they'll go extinct.'

Right now the Spanish are raping the sea bottom for fish. Is anyone doing anything? No. The animals they're making go extinct/environment they're irreversibly ruining isn't 'cute'. You don't see people boycotting fish from Spain/Japan. Nope, instead they've decided to boycott seal products (specifically from Canada, not Norway who does the same damn thing) because those animals are cuuuuute.

Wow, I know animal rights people get shit, but losing friends? Damn.

I've gotten it from both ends of the spectrum, but I won't lie, the one that irritated me most were the vegans, sorry to say. Anti-animal rights people make me furious and distraught on an ethical level, but on a personal level, nothing grinds my gears like some hipster tool preaching to me about watching PETA videos and not eating meat, when I've been rescuing and rehabilitating animals ever since I could walk. My standard response is usually, "When you've willingly woken up at six and then spent every two hours hand feeding a clutch of baby birds for several months, then you may lecture me about animal rights."

I don't know. I'm vegetarian, and I can't believe how many people I've come across who are rude or defensive about it, like my choices affect them somehow. I always feel like I need to add "but not for animal rights reasons!" whenever I mention my diet. Which I feel bad about, because while animal rights isn't my motivation, it's one I do respect.

I don't doubt that there are some preachy and judgmental vegetarians and animal rights activists out there, but the ones I've encountered are a minority compared to rude omnivores.

Maybe it's the area I live in but I feel the opposite. Omnivores generally don't even bring up the subject and mind their business, Vegans/Vegetarians are constantly trying to tell people how they should be eating and living their lives. Of course there are nice veg people too but the obnoxious ones are so loud.

I don't really care what people do I just would rather people not try to push their views on me, that goes for everything from how I eat to what religion I do or do not practice.

I doubt it.

I'm an animal rights activist too, and the stereotypes are extremely heavy. If you say you like cute widdle doggies, that's fine, but I grew up loving all animals and wanting respect for all of them. If someone asked me what animals I liked, I'd name off a long, long list of exotic things no one had ever heard of.

I became a complete outcast from school because of my love of animals. It made me an oddball, especially because if someone made a joke about abuse I'd tell them to stop it. It doesn't make you a lot of friends if you're serious about it, because so many people aren't and so that's what's expected. When you say you love animals you're supposed to mean passively, as in you still wear fur and leather and defend doing so, you still eat meat, use animal products and even hunt. There were at least three people in my high school class alone that hunted only for trophies with their families and still considered themselves 'animal lovers'.

So yeah, while it's possible OP was exaggerating, I think it's very possible they were not, sad as it is. D:

I wondered about that, too. I had a roommate who was vegan and an animal rights activist, and she always complained that people treated her differently. I felt bad for her until I realized her attitude was why people treated her like a bitch. I caught her and her friends throwing away my makeup and toiletries because they apparently had animal biproducts in them (even beeswax was a no no). They claimed I was a hypocrite for being willing to eat a chicken breast, but refusing to eat my pet rattie. If that weren't enough, roomie waited until this moment to tell me the Bath and Bodyworks giftcard I'd gotten her for her birthday was an offensive and hurtful gift because their products aren't vegan (like I'd gotten her the gift to purposefully offend her!). I'm all for the ethical treatment of animals, but I'm very cautious around vegans and activists now.

It makes me wonder if OP is one of those types who thinks telling people they're evil for liking burgers will stop animal cruelty.

Yeah I'm sure people are bitchy to vegans/animal activists sometimes without justification, I just think saying you're an "outcast" is a bit extreme. I've just never in my life witnessed someone being shunned completely for having these views (not saying it's not possible, just highly unlikely.)

And my experience is similar to yours, most vegans who claim to me that they are unjustifiably abused are usually the ones who are constantly pushing their beliefs down my throat. The chill vegans rarely talk about being outcasts, they might talk about it being rough, but they never over dramatize the problem.

I'm sorry your room mate did all that too, I think if you want animal rights to be respected you need to respect your fellow human being as well. It's one thing to open a dialogue and it's quite another to be disrespecting someone's personal choice and personal property.
