Has it occurred to you that those white strapless dresses are what people want to wear? Who cares if it's an overused symbol? People want to wear those dresses and it's none of your business if they do or don't.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I have 17 years in the business and have talked to counteless number of brides, a great deal of the time they don't want to wear the Big White Dress. Half of them don't even want to have the wedding but are pushed into it because of family's/partners/programming. I can't count the number of times I've heard "I just want to get this over with."

I'm only encouraging diversification in the whole big wedding trap. (And by trap, I mean the business that preys on the princess complexes of girls who've seen too much Cinderella, not the actual "marriage", that's different) People are varied individuals with vast opinions/hobbies/like & dislikes - how about seeing some of that on the wedding table? I see the same dresses, hear the same music, wedding after wedding after wedding. To me, the day isn't special if you're just doing the same thing everyone else is in just the same way.

Far be it for me to discourage people to wear what they want, but yes - it is an overused and not even accurate symbol, and yes - it is my business if they do or don't wear it because I actually make money off it.

In your opinion, yes. And of course, a percentage of people are only doing it to appease family/whatever. But just because you think that people should be varied doesn't mean they should or they are. I'm really not trying to argue, but I think the way you're coming across is really condescending to people who do believe in the tradition.

I would think you'd make money whether they wore a white strapless dress or a burlap sack.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm defintely sure that people aren't varied; more than 2000 weddings will certainly tell you that. I guess I jaded and disappointed? You see that many and you think you'd see something a little different, but you really don't. You also think you'd see more "in love" people but there's a surprising lack of that as well.

Now see, I have no problem with tradition. But you need to understand why you're following the tradition, the meaning being the tradition, follow it because it means something to you. But when you have a church wedding and you're falling asleep during the homily and you're drunk at the church? That's not tradition, that's just having it at the church because your mom wanted it.

Oh I'm not trying to argue as well and I apologize if I came off as condescending.

OT: I know people in fandom come from all sorts of backgrounds but I'm somehow delighted that a person who works in the wedding business lurks F!S.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I absolutely agree with you. I live in a fairly secular place, but most people still have the church wedding "for the (grand)parents" and everyone is just bored. I intend to skip it altogether, but I've seen one very beautiful, personalized ceremony that I thought was wonderful ...and you know the worst thing? People were bitching because it "wasn't traditional enough".

[identity profile] jaquenerd.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
lol this

I remember when I was little and watched the film Monsoon Wedding I wanted my wedding to be as colorful as that one.

TOO THIS DAY I AM THINKING OF BANNING WHITE AT THE CEREMONY BECAUSE IT'S KIND OF BORING/CLICHE

DA

I thought was just expressing their view on wedding dresses? Not saying everyone should wear X and not Y.

As someone who makes custom wedding dresses, I too like doing a different kind of dress whenever I get the chance to do so. Doesn't mean I dislike white wedding dresses, I just consider them a bit unoriginal when it's chosen because "everyone else does it, so I should do it too". I'm glad people care about tradition, but sometimes I just wish some brides would put a little more thought into their choices instead of trying to copy the latest trends by default.

Are you doing a TON of strapless wedding gowns? Because that's been all the rage these last few years. Do they even make gown with sleeves anymore? :D

Funny, I was just saying the other day that in this business, the photographer and the dressmaker must take the most hell. I don't know how you deal with that stress.

The reason for the lack of sleeves isn't just a fad: a sleeveless dress is SO MUCH easier to cut, you've no idea.
