Toothless needs to eat fish to survive though. The vikings probably did as well being as they lived in an area too harsh to support a variety of edible grains, vegetables, and fruits. Animal rights activists are not necessarily against people eating animals if there's a real survival need, but most humans living in the modern, developed world don't need animal products to survive. Everything we need to stay healthy is readily available to us in any grocery store.

The vikings in the movie were not killing dragons out of need, but because they feared and misunderstood them. Hiccup going against that was supporting animal rights even if neither of them could go entirely veg.

Just trying to clarify what I think OP meant.

Have you seen vegans? They're skinny ill looking people. Have all the supplements you like if you don't eat meat you are going to slowly kill yourself. Our bodies are designed as omnivores, our immune system is made to eat meat and veggies. Just look are your teeth if you don't believe it. On that flip side if you're saying: eat less bacon or you'll die of a heart attack then I agree. You need balance, meat and veggies. To much of either or leaving one or the other out of your diet completely will destroy your immune system and cause your body to slowly eat it's self.

ROFL are you joking? I AM a vegan and I know a lot of vegans. All the ones I know are a normal weight, or incredibly buff. The ones that are vastly underweight are typically anorexics who get into veganism expecting it to be a low calorie diet.
I don't take any supplements except for a little fortified soymilk with vitamin b12 in it (but keep in mind that farmed animals are fed foods fortified with b12 too because modern agricultural practices reduces the amount of this nutrient we'd normally get if we ate wild plants). I had my vitamin levels checked years after becoming vegan, and everything was at a healthy level.
Our immune system is made to eat meat and veggies huh? Do you even know what an immune system is? Also, my teeth are fine, what in the world does that have to do with anything? Actually a diet high in animal proteins has been shown to leech calcium from the bones, so I'm far less likely to suffer from osteoperosis or tooth decay than an omnivore.
I've never been healthier since I became vegan, and that goes for pretty much every vegan I know. Seriously, your post is so full of ignorance it's astounding. Even the FDA agrees that a properly planned vegan diet (any diet should be properly planned though) is perfectly healthy throughout one's life.

I'm a different anon, but wanted to explain about the "teeth" bit: humans have both canines (designed to tear apart meat) and flat-crowned teeth (designed to grind down plant matter), in addition to incisors (which both carnivores and herbivores have). We have omnivorous teeth, even though we don't have to be omnivores to be healthy. ;)

[identity profile] cypherwulf.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Our "canines" are not the canines of an animal that eats other animals. They're far too short and stubby to be useful at all. Besides, if you look at most herbivore skulls, like horses, they also have this tiny "canine" tooth.

We are omnivores, but we weren't designed to eat meat to the degree that we do. Mostly insects and the occasional carcass of another animal that we may have come across. Perhaps a small hare now and then. Biologically, we are omnivores, but we're still supposed to eat mostly plants. I'm baffled by people that make the argument for a natural diet then stuff their faces with big macs every meal hahaha.

But anyway, I'm not one of those vegans that tries to argue that humans are herbivores. I just think that we don't need to eat animals and that places a moral responsibility to do them no harm unless there is absolute need.

>We are omnivores, but we weren't designed to eat meat to the degree that we do.

REALLY! oh gee I better tell all the people that came before us that we've been doing it wrong since the dawn of time.

[identity profile] cypherwulf.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, what are you talking about. I'm saying that modern day humans stuffing their faces with meat at every meal is not even close to how much meat we evolved to eat, which was very little.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU. People don't get that eating meat for every meal (or even every day) is a fairly modern practice in the U.S. (maybe in Europe too, I'm not sure). Back in the day (but not that long ago) it was a status symbol to eat meat. We don't have to have it as often as most people do. I personally am not a vegetarian or vegan, but when I cook, it's almost always meat-free. Meat is a rarity for me, because that's just how I think it's supposed to be. We have to mass-produce meat here in America because we eat it too much, and there are so many problems with factory farming that this is just not a good thing.

Except you know, all the people I've seen who are vegans. I'd like to believe your tale of perfect health but I hear the same argument from smokers all the time.

Uh yeah, the thing that keeps you from dying, white blood cells and the energy you generally need to maintain it. Including vitamins. I agree with your 'diet high in animal proteins has been shown to leech calcium from the bones' but that's if you like…eat a more meat then veggie diet/eat to much in general.

Also I'd love to agree with your 'FDA says so' statement but…they're the same people who's diet would have made the world obese as it had way to much you were suppose to consume. Also the FDA is usually in someone's pocket or another's so I like to go by the: eat what is healthy that I know by practice, personal history and family health.

Your 'meat is not necessary' could also be seen as utterly ignorant as people still need the damn proteins/vitamins/oils in meat to live. A healthy balanced diet is what is needed, you don't heal a cut on your arm by amputating the whole damn arm.

No, really, I promise you, I'm not a zombie. I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] cypherwulf isn't, either.

On a serious note, I think there can be a degree of classism or city-centrism among vegans, where it doesn't occur to everyone that some people -- usually poorer people -- live in areas that are basically food deserts, and where access to the necessaries for a healthy vegan diet is not always feasible. This is one of the reasons why I don't think judging or shaming people for not being veg is the way forward, and I think it's often disregarded when people try to emphasize how easy it is to be healthy on a vegan diet.

But if you do have access to the resources, and the time/energy to cook your own meals, it's entirely possible, and not that hard. And a blanket statement like the one above is just hilariously wrong.

(Edited b/c I accidentally implied that all vegans were middle-class, and I know that's totally not the case!)

Hello, thar. I'm just a random commenter, commenting to show support for what you say. I'm currently vegetarian and I'm hoping to be vegan someday, once I become more disciplined in planning out what I eat and graduate college (my school's not even that great about veggie options, there are no vegans on campus because it's impossible).

So yes... drive-by approval and happiness.
