Yes. This.

And even if you take the position that deism is 'false' or 'made-up', the entire concept of Fandom Secrets is a testament to the power of fiction as it affects and inspires real life. Atheist snobs are not as far off from the religious as they like to think. Not here.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
... are you really comparing people watching doctor who to religion

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I actually kind of liked the comparison. For an atheist who thinks that all religion is a figment of the imagination, they certainly like to discuss and wank about fiction on F!S, which is all also figments of the imagination and that fiction has a huge impact on their lives.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, but discussing it and being influenced by it isn't the same as having faith. people recognize that it's fictional, and fiction doesn't lay out a set of rules and tell everyone they have to follow them or they'll be punished for the rest of eternity. it's never taken away anyone's rights or had people beaten/killed/ostracized from society.

the people who do think it's real are called crazy.

will you shut the fuck up

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
You're still here? You're not even contributing anything aside from going "shut the fuck up" to anyone who breathes a negative word about religion.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
lol cry moar I do still get responses in a different subthread that have me coming here jsyk

seriously though your sneering elitism doesn't make you look edgy

lofl don't even fucking try

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
sure, like star wars hasn't made a religion. Luckily, as far as we know, no ones died but just wait…As for influence of fiction causing death, it does all the time. Horror movies cause people to try to kill people all the time. There are lots of other ways fiction does harm.

Religion is in the eyes of the beholder and mean many things to many people. It's like saying all Atheists want to remove religion completely from life, thinking that will solve the world's problems. It isn't true in either parts. Lots of Atheists have a live and let live policy as do many religious folks. There are definitely times when the church has been used as a tool of genocide, and there will be times it will be used as such again. It is up to those of that religion to denounce their actions and actively do what they can to help those that are harmed by the zealots.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
i'm sorry, but i just don't see it. people being "inspired" to kill somebody thanks to fiction is so rare, especially in comparison to how religion has made things pretty consistently shit for women/gay people/etc. i know it's not the fault of every religious person today, and i'm not blaming the ones who are progressive and nice, but i cannot find it in myself to think religion is just great when it's had nothing but a negative impact on my life and an even worse one for millions of other people. i can't open my arms and embrace religion when i'm viewed as less than human and banned from marrying the person i love because ~god said so~, or when people are just so stunned and condescending if i say i'm atheist (note that i don't say anything negative to religious people irl), or how it's muddled our views on morality so we're afraid to put a stop to people's suffering because it's "disrespectful," or when i hear about the unspeakable shit happening in other countries because of religion. and what gets me in this thread is that religion has been in control since ever, atheists are the most hated group in america (http://www.soc.umn.edu/~hartmann/files/atheist%20as%20the%20other.pdf), and then religious people act like they're oppressed martyrs because people make pissy remarks in fandom?

i'm sorry i snapped, and i understand that there's nice people out there. but when somebody talks about their religion (particularly when i don't know them), it's just... off-putting.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
and when you talk about your hate on for religion it is just as upsetting. Religion has not ruined millions of lives. People have. Do you think, even for a moment, that people would stop killing one another and stop discriminating if there was no religion? Not a chance and you see that everyday. Religion isn't to blame here (unless it's a religion that actively calls for you to murder someone…but that isn't a religion anymore) it's man kind.

Now there are lots of way religion can be used for evil, don't get me wrong I don't trust the church as far as I could throw it, but there are more good people then there are bad.

Personally I don't think gay marriage should be banned, that's a stupid philosophy. I also thing that one should look for God/Goddess/Gods of themselves and not simply believe whatever a person says. People are fallible, all people religious or not.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
1. America =/= the world. No, really. You talking as though atheists are oppressed by religious people all over the world, when some of us religious people can't reveal our faith without being mocked or worse (you say, "people are just so stunned and condescending if i say i'm atheist", well, that's exactly how people around here react when I say I'm religious, and I have it impossibly easy compared to some religious people in other countries), is quite simply unfair.

2. I don't remember, say, Soviet Russia or Communist China being encouraging of gay people or other minorities. I don't remember them introducing gay marriage as soon as they finally got rid of the oppression of religion. I also don't remember them being held for very long as paragons of freedom and equality for all, even though they had no religion-based official discriminating laws. No religion =/= tolerance and enlightenment.

Yes I understand you have it tough, but that doesn't mean that you can equate billions of religious people all over the world and throughout the ages with the zealots you have to endure in your own time and country.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-25 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
Have you ever thought that perhaps the reason why we're the most hated group in America is because of ass holes like you who keep pissing people off by telling them that what they believe in is full of murder, bigotry, and hate? jfc, someone decides to talk about their religion. That's not a big deal. They have a right to, especially if they're not forcing you to believe it. Even if they are, you can take the high road, be the more mature party, act like a real representative for atheism, and politely back out of the conversation. You don't have to go around and making people feel like shit for talking about what they believe in, especially if you want any respect afterwards.

If you want to be viewed as a human being, treat others like human beings. Atheism needs people to realize that because, yeah, we're not exactly getting the best rep when the crazy people go around and think they're so great for telling people Santa doesn't exist. Yes, it's possible to treat people like human beings and still be respected. You do that, and people won't be as inclined to tell you to sit down and shut up. It's when you whine that everyone else doesn't share your views that people stop wanting to accept you.

Or even shorter: Even an atheist wants you to shut the fuck up right now.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Most Atheists have the tendency to thumb their noses at Jesus, and then log onto World of Warcraft so they can pretend to be an orc for a couple of hours. They sneer at the Bible, but have no problem playing endless hours of vampire role playing games. The message is clear. Fantasies are OK as long as they include gratuitous violence and some sort of porn."-Violent Acres

(no, I don't believe MOST atheists are like this, just that the ones that are are hilariously annoying.)
(not that religious people aren't also quite hilariously annoying sometimes.)

(Anonymous) 2011-01-25 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
That's precisely what I meant :) I don't know what Violent Acres is but it seems we share a view.

Of course atheists don't believe orcs are 'real' in the same way that the religious believe their deity is real (and I wouldn't equate them anyway) but they can both affect real beliefs and real behaviour.

Exactly.

And let me note that not all religious people believe their deity is real the same way that other religious people do... I've met a lot of Christians who think the Bible is full of stories--and that doesn't make it any less "real" to them, even if they don't believe it happened. They consider it all metaphorical and interpretable. Just sayin'

Violentacres (http://www.violentacres.com/) is this hilarious, offensive, bitter, sarcastic blogger. I don't agree with like 60% of the stuff she says, but damn, she knows how to make a point.
