it's horrible that 'animal activists' are ruining the lives of thousands of people and not even saving the actual endangered animals. Just the ones they think are cute.

thank you very much for this concise, yet well-founded and thorough analysis of the animal rights and animal welfare movement(s). it is a complicated issue, what with all the different theories and practices that are often clashing, but you summed it up perfectly. a welcome and enrichening contribution to this thread!

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
and yet the Japanese, Norwegians and others are still hunting whales. I understand that it's a complicated issue, unfortunately what's being blocked/prohibited aren't things like over fishing it's protecting bambi. Bambis who are overpopulating to the point where they're killing thousands of people when they cross roads because they are starving to death and need food, hence their migration.

okay, let me rephrase this without the snark and sarcasm.

"animal activism" is a very, very broad term. it encompasses a number of different ideas - ranging from loving and rescuing everything that is small and cute and fluffy to the theory that all animals should be treated as individuals with their own agency who deserve to live their own lives as much as humans do - and various types of activism - be it personal choices regarding consumption, working in animal shelters, distributing leaflets, or more offensive practices such as sabotage and physically liberation of animals (see: ALF, animal liberation front) or attacks on those who are seen as responsible for animal exploitation (see: ARM, animal rights militia)

yes, some animal rights activists even are trying to stop whaling (eg sea shepherd)

you seem to think of a very specific subset of animal activism, and i just don't think it makes sense to discuss this if you aren't specifying exactly what you are talking about.

I'm about being allowed to eat meat in peace and helping animals who need it. Seeing groups like PETA and others ruining the lives of thousands of people for their 'beliefs' is just as stupid as a holy crusade from a religion. Not that I'll get into religion just making it a point of comparison.

Rofl, what in the world are you even talking about. Animal rights activists are the only ones out there stopping people from hunting whales. Never heard of Sea Shepherd?
Also, the supposed "deer overpopulation problem" is an artifice created by the hunting tourism industry. Money from hunting permits goes toward trapping, shooting, and poisoning animals that eat or compete with deer (such as wolves, coyotes, and competing herbivores like mountain goats) so there will be more animals to hunt.
Also, animal rights activists typically focus on the least respected animals such as farmed animals and vivisected animals. Quite the opposite of wildlife groups that only focus on cute, charismatic wild animals. Not that I have a problem with what they do since no one is going to donate money to help some obscure species they don't care about.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
How about fish then. No one cares about the fish even though they are going extinct from over fishing. Fish aren't 'cute' like cows and sheep I guess so they get no attention.

[identity profile] cypherwulf.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Animal rights activists care a lot about fish, as do many environmental organizations. Fish have been getting a lot of attention, but lobbies and human carelessness are more powerful, unfortunately. Instead of blaming us, how about you stop eating fish.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I only eat fish I know aren't being over fished. And for all your bluster you sure don't present much of a point. If so much is being done why is there still over fishing? Environmentalists sure aren't putting much effort on boycotting fish from Spain or stopping them from raping the sea bottom. Yet they'll boycott the 'cute animal' products.

I'd go on but you've made your point of view pretty clear; you believe everyone should be vegan because you say so. Which btw is a great point. You go on about how high meat diets ruin health and I agree but don't seem to understand the point no meat diets can be just as bad. You will not even look at any facts that point out that meat is sometimes a thing we must consume. That even some plant eater animals do it to get the necessary oils/vitamins they need.

[identity profile] cypherwulf.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say enough was being done, I said that people are trying, but the people that don't care far outnumber those that do. And remember that trawling is an indiscriminate way of fishing. There is no way to eat fish sustainably anymore, just more sustainable or less sustainable.

How do no meat diets ruin people's health? Sure, if you're retarded about it, but that goes for any diet. My concern isn't about health, it's about animals and the environment primarily.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
No it isn't…you've stated again and again that it's the meat that's the problem. You haven't even talked about helping preserve the lands/oceans these creatures come from. All you keep going on about is how 'vegan is so awesome' and 'if meat is so expensive buy veggies because that totally solves all our problems duuuuuuurrr'

As I said, I'm done talking to you…you just aren't smart enough to actually have a conversation with.

[identity profile] cypherwulf.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't say meat is the only problem, but that's what people seem to be focusing on so that's where my debate is going. Of course I care about the lands and oceans too, that's why I repeatedly talk about how being vegan also helps the environment. Putting so many words into my mouth.

You are seriously butthurt, it's funny.
