Often when Godwin's law is "called" in conversation, it is used as a last attempt to win an argument. I.E. said party does not really have an argument, so it compares the other party (or other party's stance) as being Nazi...which, really, in most cases they're not.

Of course political systems out there might be problematic, but not even the pre-nazi government was Nazi in itself, it was national socialist actually...and in theory it could have gone another way than Nazism.

Some words do have very grave baggage attached to them, Nazi being one of them. Yes, some governments could be labeled as extreme right wing. But even an extremely right wing government does not necessarily lead to the willful extermination of its own citizens. Calling someone a "Nazi" is a very grave accusation indeed, and it becomes ridiculous if used for something less.

Of course you can call a regime on nationalist hatred...in fact, you should. But call it what it is, which is: dangerous nationalist hatred. Nazism is really a step beyond.

And the funny thing is, personally I have never actually heard it be used in actual reference to governments.

I have heard it used in debates such as
-abortion
-repatriation of illegal immigrants
-as a general attack towards people who have an ideology that is more "right-wing" than yours
-people who have made racist comments
etc...

And really, NO...no matter how much you may oppose any of the above...aborting a fetus, struggling with immigration policies, having right-wing ideology, or calling a POC a name does not equal the planned, well-executed annihilation of millions of Jews, Romani people, gays, and people with disabilities.

People always leave out the political victims for some reasons. I guess we don't like to feel sorry for communists or something?

Of course I am just proud that you mentioned any group in addition to Jews. All pieces of the puzzle, sadly.

Sorry, I do care about people being held for political reasons. Strangely enough, in Nazi context, they are very rarely mentioned. Now I do wonder why that is...
