Van Canto is amazing, albeit in a hilariously ridiculous way. Fun fact: they initially wanted vocal percussion as well, but decided to go with real drums when everyone they auditioned passed out from hyperventilation.

Agreed. Music with synthesized instruments are considered "real music", like when they add in trumpet sounds that aren't from actual trumpets, but Vocaloids can't be because they aren't real people singing? It doesn't make sense to me.

Well I gotta admit those songs are pretty interesting. Doesn't stop me from thinking how stupid Vocaloids sound though. Thank gosh for nico singers?

It's still real music, and it's cool how they can find an outlet for their talent without having to find a singer because the program does what it does. BUT I still think the sound of the voices is squarely in the uncanny valley, maybe when the technology gets better it will work better? I really wish the english version sounded as good as the japanese one does, but MAN THE ENGLISH ONES SOUND SCARY

I usually just hear that the vocaloid ruins the song because of how bad/weird/high-pitched they sound. Although I haven't run into anyone who says it isn't real music. I basically agree with you, and also think the same thing about auto-tuning real vocals.

Yeah well, eventually all the OMG ELECTRONIC IS NOT "REAL" MUSIC assholes will either die off or get with the times. We use computers for everything these days, composing music is no different. I don't see how using Vocaloid is any better or worse than using other electronic music programs, or synth, or whatever. People who say "it's not real music" know nothing about music or composition anyway.

I don't think I've ever said it wasn't music, just that it was really really shitty music.

It is, however, music, in the same way Owl City is technically 'music' I suppose.

As much as I might have just posted in the clusterfuck thread above, I generally don't consider this a battle worth fighting, if I'm brutally honest. Music is already highly subjective and tends to throw up a lot of these sorts of arguments, and then on top of that the issue of vocaloid voices and common genres is going to make the issue even more polarising. It sucks, yes, but if someone's adamantly determined not to like it the best thing you can probably go and do is take your ball and continue to enjoy yourself elsewhere.

Agreed so much. You have no idea how much I heard "Vocaloid music isn't music" when the Bluray Concert DVDs got popular and there were all these new articles about 'a concert over a hologram' (because its not Gorillaz has ever done this, m i rite :T)

People keep assuming that Vocaloid chugs out music. Its about the composition and the technical skill to make the Vocaloid impressive. 99% of all vocaloid music is fan made. To disregard all amateur musicians/producers/writes/artists is indeed incredibly shallow.
