Man, I'm so glad I got out when I did. That whole fandom is utter crap these days and it's saddening when I think back on how much fun it used to be years ago ... and now it's just full of rabid, ass kissing bad fangirls. It killed my inspiration to write for it as well, I can't even touch it creatively these days in any form whatsoever.

I'm pretty much out, even if I'm one of the mods over there. It was a ton of fun years back, so it's a shame to see what it's come to now. I just cling to the older fans and that's that.

Yeah, I remember back in the day when there was a handful of active posters and none of the drama. No one cared about what pairings people liked, or how popular they were in fandom ... or how many reviews they got. We were all just fans of the series and had fun. I remember back then I used to tell myself I'd never end up being a bitchy fan, and well ... all it took was the fandom going to hell and I did just that. But I'm better now. A year and a half away from that stuff helps a lot.

It's really all Square's fault, too. The Compilation KILLED FFVII, because it brought in a new wave of disgusting, weeabo fanbrats.

Exactly. All these people who didn't play the game and had no intention of playing the game started acting like they knew everything and in doing so completely ruined characterization. AC was shit in my opinion. It was pretty and shiny and I fangirled harder than most when it finally was released, but it was because I was finally getting to see something I had loved for years and had made so many friends through and had defined a lot of who I was indirectly because of friends and experiences rendered so beautifully. It was something I had talked about for years ... but yanno, as a film it sucked. It made the game pointless ... it raped canon and overall just was like some really pretty packaged fanfiction.

Which was all fine and good ... but then the new fans came and made it their gospel.

I'm writing FFVII fic but then I'm new to fandom. I'm not new to the game, I played it and loved it when it first came out. But I still like the characters and I'm writing fics for it. Maybe it's because being new to fandom I missed all the storm and fury over it.

I try very hard to keep the characters IN character. I don't get a lot of reviews mainly I suppose because my writing isn't full of smut (I've noticed that the fics that are basically nothing but smut tend to get a large amount of ecstatic reviews...I don't want that. If someone gives me a nice review I want it to be because they think I write well.)

If an author says they've never played FFVII, I tend to skip over their fic. Because really the game established who and what the characters are. If they're going just by the movie then I'm sorry but they don't know the characters. Before I started posting my fics I even went back and replayed the game to refresh my memory.

I feel sad though that FFVII isn't really being taken seriously anymore as a fandom.
