Hussie is really trying his hardest to tell a serious story while still keeping things relentlessly lighthearted. I have to say I kind of appreciate it; far too many comics make the mistake of accompanying a shift to high drama with a shift to oppressive grimdarkness.

As the man himself has said, comedy and drama can and should coexist in the same story, often in the same panel.
