That he has no valid reason is kind of the entire point.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-01 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
and that makes him a better villain than all the other madmen with no point to their world domination besides "lol i felt like it" how? is it supposed to be ironically tragic or something? it just makes him seem like an idiot for having such conviction based on nothing, and I find that pathetic rather than inspiring

why yes, I do have pent up annoyance towards blind and frantic sephiroth fans, thanks for asking

I'M SORRY ANON THIS GOT SO TL;DR

It is pathetic - in a literal, "I pity you" sort of way. Also kind of the point.

Obviously I can only give my .02 here and Sephiroth fans come in many shapes and stripes and have been arguing about him, his reasons, and his significance since the dawn of time, but here's the way I see it: He's tragic in the literal sense ("a great person destined through a flaw of character or conflict with some overpowering force, as fate or society, to downfall or destruction" - everything Shinra did to set him up was exactly what knocked him down) and his location in the story is really effective. He has a lot in common with many of our heroes and is just the ultimate culmination of Shinra's evil and the nihilistic disillusionment that they inspire in people.

The point is that he didn't have a reason any more valid than Cloud or Aeris or any of AVALANCHE to hate Shinra - but doesn't that just help to build Cloud up, and separate him out as someone who tried to make the right choice? It's sort of a necessary contrast when your heroes are terrorists who don't really admit what they've done until much later in the second disc and your main character is upfront about being driven by revenge... But again, irrational emotionality is something they've all sort of got in common.

So, yes, anyway, I don't think it really has to make sense, I don't think he has to be justified, and I don't think he is. He's just super pissed, unable to let go of this idea that he is somebody great and special, and so he's manufactured this excuse and plan to make himself feel better (but then there are all shades of "how much of it is specifically his fault" which I think makes for a more interesting character anyway).

ANYWAY SORRY ABOUT THAT but TL;DR I think there's legit reasons to like him and legit reasons to dislike him, such as the fact that half of his fans just like his hair and the other half write sprawling mini-essays at the first invitation and that he's practically a bit character in the poorly translated game of his origin and has never been consistent across all of it's money-grabbing sequels, prequels and alternate incarnations, BUT HEY THAT'S WHY THEY SAY YMMV.

Those are very fair points. I appreciate the effort to see that his strengths are equally his weaknesses, and depending on one's viewpoint, they may either come across as terrible or consciously curious characterization. I have issue with people putting him on a pedestal simply because he's supposedly different from all the other powerhungry villains, when he isn't; but there are elements to him that can be analyzed if so need be, I just personally don't think they are all that intentional, i.e. actually there in the script (though the translation probably didn't help with that). It's what we make of him as fans that potentially turns him into a fascinating creature, but that owes less to the original character and more what his fans are willing to make of him. Whether that's good or bad is pretty subjective.

Well, I think he is different in that he doesn't really give a fuck about power and so he isn't powerhungry at all, haha. I also think he's different from later FF villains because... well, a lot of them are trying to be like him? Seymour and Kuja, I'm looking at you!

The whole topic is pretty subjective and pretty contingent on your opinion of FF7 as a whole, I think, but FF7 is one of those games where I am perfectly willing to discard the creator's intention (seeing as how all of the creators seem just as willing to do the same) and just appreciate what I see in it. If other people don't see it, that's cool, we can argue about it on the internet some more.

I like your icon~!

Despite my TL;DR, Sephiroth isn't my favourite character - Aeris is.

She was amazing. The part where she talks to Cloud before she dies was... ughfhghfg sniffles.

Aeris went through just as much shit as Cloud and Sephiroth and dealt with it better than both of them, with grace and selflessness and courage and a great sense of humour. She's not exactly an unsung hero but she's a BAMF who doesn't get half the singing she deserves.
