I wish I had links to studies but I'm fairly certain it's been suggested that degrading people who are overweight does not motivate them like some people think it might.

It's actually better to build up a person's self esteem so then they'll want to be healthy and have more motivation to work out and eat right.

I can say it makes sense to me, when I'm in the worst pits of my depression I don't want to eat right, I don't want to exercise, I pretty much want to sit there. The same thing goes for when I'm too stressed.

The "concerned for your health" shit needs to stop. I am fat and I never have any health problems, I also exercise everyday and make sure I get all my vitamins in my meals. I am fat and *shock* attempt to take care of myself.

I would imagine that as with anything else there's a really small percentage of people who would react to insults by buckling down and getting obsessed with losing weight just to "show them." Seems like for most people it's just going to make them that much more self-conscious about going out to try to lose weight, like going to a gym, seeking out a nutritionist or personal trainer, looking for better food. I think it's hard for a lot of people to start what might be a long, hard process knowing that people are jeering at them and think they suck. (In fact, maybe the person has already lost a lot of weight but they're still overweight by someone else's standard. Instead of being rewarded for losing weight they're still getting insulted.)

Maybe they should compare it to other things: do people quit smoking because random people insult them? Get better grades in school? Is that an effective form of encouragement for most people in anything?

I can tell you right now I absolutely do not go to the gym when I'm out of shape. The only gym I go to is when I visit my parents gym because my father is part owner of a gym that is really mostly senior citizens. I only feel comfortable going there because I don't feel like older people are really going to judge me as harshly as some of the super in shape people at a regular gym.

I think that's a good question to ask, especially when talking the nature of addiction (whether that addiction be food or drugs or whatever) and it's relation to self esteem.

I began losing weight when a great friend described me, one by one, my physical awesomeness. It was 6 monts ago.
Before that, I never manage to lose weight, because all people told me was that it was unhealthy and I should do sport and should "make an effort". I like sport, but I don't like the idea that I have to do sport only for my health. Where is the fun in that ?
