Ooh, ooh! If we're going the judgment route, can I think less of people that only play FPS? (Hi there, little brother.) Besides, all my favourite series are on Nintendo! ...Icon extremely related.

Uh

It really depends on what FPS games we're talking about. I can't explain why Call of Duty has such huge mass-market appeal 'cuz I was there when it was just a no-name PC game by a bunch of former Medal of Honor devs, but while I do like that series, I tend to prefer my FPS games take a more cerebral route like the Stalker series, or the original Deus Ex, et cetera.

Halo, mostly, as far as I can tell. The little bugger's glued to it. But yeah, I have come across a lot of people that think the highlight of video gaming in the past three decades is Shooting Up People Real Good.

Halo is fucking dire. A lot of that is Microsoft's fault, unfortunately, but Bungie isn't entirely blameless either.

Actually, the main reason Halo and CoD are so popular is because of the multiplayer. Very few people actually play the single player campaigns. A similar situation cropped up with Half-Life and Counterstrike. Counterstrike, the original mod made back in like 2000 or so, required Half-Life to run. I knew a lot of guys who bought Half-Life and never actually played it; they only got it for CS. It's a fucking shame, considering HL is a great game that pretty much changed the entire industry.

Just chiming in to say that actually, while the replay value of those games and the majority of the manhours spent playing them is definitely in the multiplayer, Acti studied the audience and found that an astonishing (to them, I wasn't all that shocked, I know several people who only play campaign and co-op) 30% of buyers never go online in Call of Duty.

Which is why Treyarch put the "training" mode in Black Ops, to encourage the huge number of people who only play offline to try the multiplayer.

It's mostly like Counterstrike, but the campaigns are what broke the series open above the rest (CoD4's specifically) and have some levels anyone would consider truly memorable (Prypiat, anyone?). Same with Halo, I think. There are a shitton of Halo fans who love the story, buy the novels, etc.

The problem being that there's a lot more to the FPS genre other than Call of Duty and its many clones. :)

Of course, the same could be said for Nintendo games! People tend to forget there's more than Mario and Zelda. They have a lot of IPs, I tend to lean more towards Metroid myself. (Poor Other M, why weren't you better? Sob.)

This exactly is what bugs me so much about this secret. Only owning a Nintendo console doesn't mean you're only playing Mario and Zelda. You might also be playing F-Zero, Fire Emblem, Eternal Darkness, No More Heroes, Muramasa, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom...

I, uh. Still do not own a Mario or a Zelda anything for my Wii or my DS, now that I think about it.

Galaxy's on my wish list but I just keep getting distracted picking up other things first! As much as I love Nintendo and enjoy just about all of their big series (except maybe Pokeymans), my favorite first party franchises of theirs are Fire Emblem and F-Zero. Suck it, Link!

I have the Mario 25 anniversary thing and New Mario DS! And uh, Twilight Princess. I have not played them, but I've played my Fire Emblems and Metroids. For the most part. Really, I *like* Nintendo, I've just been a bad fan as of late!

Is there any reason why the 25th Anniversary thing would be worth owning to someone who already has Super Mario All-Stars? Because as much as I love those games, I can't really justify it to myself if that's all there is to it. :|a

Well, if you're like me and too lazy to dig out your SNES + Allstars out of storage and your Wii is already in your current home. :) It was 30 bucks at the time, so I felt it was cheap enough. I'm not sure if it's rare yet though.

Yeah, I (finally) picked up a PS3 recently, but for a good long while, I wasn't willing to drop the money on more than one current gen console, and Wii won because it just flat out had more things that I really wanted to play! (Well, that and I was waiting to see what Atlus did, but.) There's a lot of good stuff for any console if you're willing to look past the shovelware, so why look down on anyone because they bought what they, personally, found the most appealing? \o_o/

I agree with you, but it's just that I got that OP was referring to games developed (or published) by Nintendo, rather than just existing on one of their consoles.

Or maybe they did mean just the consoles, and now it's just general console war dumbassery they were getting at.

OP was inspecific enough that it can read either way, IMO. I just refer to the third party games too because I've seen very few people who completely refuse to touch anything that isn't a first party title, even among console loyalists.

Heh, true... there are a lot of people that seem stuck in the idea that video games = shooting people a lot, though. Okay, and if you're not a fan of blowing people up?

And true! There's also Pokemon ;) (I mostly stick to series, anyway, not consoles. Zelda and Pokemon just happen to both be on Nintendo. The Soul series is all over the place console-wise, heh.)
