I don't suggest everyone should take gaming dead seriously and I certainly don't hate Nintendo by itself, they make some excellent games no doubt. I just find it ridiculous when some people consider themselves gamers yet never wander outside that Nintendo "bubble", thinking they don't need to, and ignore all the innovation happening on other platforms. This doesn't seem to happen with any other console. I've never met a Playstation owner who only plays Sony franchises.

I used Portal as an example because it's a well-designed classic by any standard and deserves to be played by anyone.

Is Portal old enough to be a classic?

Re: OP

(not op) The games industry moves incredibly fast. Things from ten years ago are considered totally out of date, and anything past that is for like, 'hardcore gamers only' because it's too inaccessible. So yeah I'd say 3 years is long enough ago considering its high quality, popularity and fairly unique approach.

I've ever heard of an age requirement for that.

Well-designed? A classic? Are you fucking serious? Portal is very easy (most of the game feels like a tutorial) and the humor is forced and unfunny. Team Fortress 2, another Orange Box game, was a far better example of the law of good game design: it was perfectly balanced. Of course Valve had to go cock it up later but for 6 months it was amazing!

Re: OP

Oh come on, the humour was pretty good. It's just the idiots overquoting it that have made it seem so awful. There were lots of lines in there that were much more subtle than the ones that most people remember and were still funny, and I liked the way it was passive-aggression instead of lolrandom or gore humour.

And yeah I guess it's easy for those who are completely used to puzzle games and first-person navigation, but plonk down someone who rarely plays games and watch them be absolutely fucking baffled by the entire concept of portals. I wonder what kind of people Valve's testers were for this game?

I played Portal like, the day after Orange Box was released (preordered and everything- I'm a big Half-Life fan) so I got in ahead of the meme storm. I just was not enamored of the humor. I can't exactly explain why, as lolrandom/gore jokes aren't my brand of humor either. I think it's 'cuz I read SomethingAwful and sites of that sort for years prior (this was when SA was worth reading) and it just didn't do it for me.

the 99% of game critics who loved it would like a word with you
just because you find it easy doesn't make it objectively shit

hello argumentum ad populum how are you today

Re: OP

I love Nintendo, so I choose to buy their consoles. I game on the PC too, and I wish I could afford a PS3 and an XBox, but it's expensive. Sometimes people stick to one console because they can't afford anything else. :(

And I have met plenty of Playstation people who only play in Sony.

who the fuck cares about labels

Well yeah, console elitism (ie: brand loyalty) is mind-numbingly stupid. They'd still be gamers since it's not a serious you need to qualify for. You play games, you're a gamer. If you only play Nintendo games (or fps or rpgs or puzzle quest what have you) and dismiss what you have never played, you're just a boring gamer. In my opinion.

However, maybe they can call themselves an enthusiast (of a genre, a company, everything, etc.). You specialize in knowing that specific game or company whatever. Makes sense to me.

Also, Cave Story. Just going to rec that while I'm here.

Seconding Cave Story -- it's the epitome of "not-what-it-says-on-the can." (And I don't mean that in the Eversion sense!)
