Ngl, I instantly value people less when they admit they've never read/couldn't get into the Lord of the Rings. I'll give you a little leeway on The Silmarillion, because it's not just a book, it's a massive chunk of an entire world's mythology and history. But when people are like "yeah, I read some of the Hobbit in middle school and I saw the movies but I never read the books," I set them a few dozen pegs down in my mental chart of who is awesome and who is dumb.

Of course, you can't just tell people that, so when people are like "oh, never read the books, man" I kind of fake a smile and go, "er, well, they're a tough read, I guess, so that makes sense?".
