OP, your friends suck. But I know how you feel. I got mocked relentlessly for being a Tolkien fangirl when I was in middle school (way, way before the movies were a gleam in anyone's eye). But it passes, and I'm sure the denizens of f!s will be happy to tell you that you are not alone at all.

I was with you until the judgey-judgey bit at the end... and I guess that's why it has to be a fucking secret.
But really, try to let go of that. It's childishly petty and you'll feel much better.

You should probably find new friends, then, if yours actively hate something so important to you, and in exchange you secretly think they're "lesser [people] with no morals, no will, and no heart[s]."

I was with you until that last bit. Not I think very little of you. In fact, I think you are a lesser person with no morals, no will, and very little brain. Funny how that worked out.

Really? You think you're that superior to all your friends because they don't like The Silmarillion? Wow.

[identity profile] caelith.livejournal.com 2011-02-06 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Judging a person by their reading material is ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-06 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
So you hate most of your friends?

(Anonymous) 2011-02-06 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like that book. Judge away. You deserve those shitty friends IMO.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2011-02-06 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Not everyone likes the same thing. I'm sorry that your friends can't appreciate something you love so much, but expecting everyone else to love it and then thinking less of them when they don't? No.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-06 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no a Tolkien nerd thinks less of me.

I got that book as a present when I was a kid because I liked The Hobbit (not LOTR). Does it actually have anything in it apart from wanky fake mishmashes of various cultural legends? I never got past that stuff because it was dull as fuck, is there an actual story later on or something

OH NOES! SOMEONE IS JUDGING ME ON THE INTERNET FOR MY LACK OF TASTE IN LITERATURE!!!11!!!

Whatever is a weak-willed, morally corrupt moron to do?

:)

[identity profile] innatizzy.livejournal.com 2011-02-06 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there's something wrong when people get their morals on life, and all the knowledge they consider important, from one book.

[identity profile] paperback-bible.livejournal.com 2011-02-06 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not really fair OP. I'm the first to admit that the Silm is probably my favorite of Tolkien's works but it's definitely not for everyone.

That's cool, OP

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-02-06 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
The way I see it, this is something that's important to you, so unless you're trolling (or really, even if you are), nothing I say is going to change your mind.

That being said, a few points:

1.) I have nothing against Tolkien. At all. On the contrary, I fully recognize his genius and the way that he was basically the Father of the fantasy genre. So many tropes that we see in fantasy today spawn from his works, and the mere fact that I have so much trouble creating my world, knowing full well that I'll never be able to create the sort of masterpiece that Tolkien did, makes me give him my utmost respect. That's not to say the man was without faults, because of course he had them -- everyone does -- but the fact remains that he did something that no one else will ever be able to even come close to imitating. That right there gains my respect.

2.) However, I do not like his style of writing. One can respect what the man did for the fantasy genre and acknowledge the fact that he created a masterpiece without enjoying the books themselves. Perhaps it's because I was introduced to video games at such a young age (which I know took away my patience for movies, because if I'm going to be staring at something for two hours or more, I best be interacting with it), or perhaps it's simply because I grew up reading books that contained more action than not, but I cannot handle his lengthy description. The man was a master of description, yes, but he goes into such detail that it takes him three pages or more to finish describing a flower field. My attention span simply can't handle that. By the time I get to the end of his description, I've forgotten what he was describing at the beginning, and I've also lost all interest in what's going on. It takes away from the action, for me. Tolkien's excessive description drains away my interest until I just say "screw it" and toss the book aside.

3.) It's fine to have your opinions. Everyone has them. And I can assure you that no one here cares what you think of them -- I certainly don't, for even if you think that I'm nothing more than a simpleton who probably has difficulty remembering how to walk, I can assure you that my feelings are in no way wounded by your secret. However, I think it might benefit you a bit to judge people a little less harshly on what they do or don't like. If your friends tease/mock you, then it would benefit them to do the same. Like I said at the beginning of this, it's likely that nothing I say will change your mind. But believe it or not, there is more to each person than their tastes in literature, and you could miss out on becoming close with an awesome person simply because you discounted them after they revealed to you that they didn't particularly enjoy the Silmarillion.

Just a thought.

... I was smiling until I got to the bottom of the secret. And... augh, OP. :I Why you do dis?

As a fellow Tolkien nerd, (re-reading LotR right now!) I was with you until that last statement. Uncool, op, uncool.

[identity profile] red-pill.livejournal.com 2011-02-07 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
ive tryed to read it. im sure its someones cup of tea, but it isnt mine. its to dense. its like reading kant all over agine, only with less attachment to a logical paradime.

so, short version is, dont judge so harsh, not everys up to reading that kind of style. i wanted to read it, as im sure the storys epic, but alas...

I can understand how you learned about hope, love, friendship and strength from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but from the Silmarillion? All that book has to impart is Elvish geneaology. And Finwaksfoodl begat Fidnalkenisn who begat Fidmewoanty and blah blah blah. Like reading Chapter 4,5 and 11 of Genesis all over again.
