I think us HP fans are quick to defend it because most of us grew up with it and it is an integral part of our childhood. I know that for me, personally it hasn't been about the pacing, the plot holes or the admittedly disappointing ending for a long time. I've made my peace with them. I love all the characters fiercely and, lame as that might seem to someone else, they've taught me most of what I know about love, family, bravery and fighting for what you believe in. I guess it feels like we're being insulted when someone criticises the books. It is very much irrational, I know and does not excuse the behavior, but there it is.

Seriously, the series has a butt-ton of faults but it doesn't make me adore it less.

This is very much so true. Good point. A lot of the HP fans grew up with this series and we're secretly SO dreading the last movie coming out because it means we have absolutely nothing to look forward to now (don't get me wrong, I'm excited for the movie, but it's bittersweet because the series will officially be done). Since the book series ended and the movie series is about to come to a close, I bet a lot of fans are getting even more defensive about it because they want to honor the closing of such an epic part of their childhood.
