Clearly you don't watch "Glee." Anyway, IA that some HP fans are freakishly mad about Twilight, but that's not all of us; plenty of us don't even consider it a valid comparison and just sort of laugh it off. And once again I will ask: why hate when you can LOL?

[identity profile] fivil.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
lol butthurt Twilight fan

come join us in the Doctor Who fan boards for a day or so. Make sure you say you liked Time Cop and Crime Traveller.

[identity profile] rattatas.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, but that's just, like, your opinion, bro

seriously tho not all of us are like that. i don't think hp has the "best" writing, but i do think it's pretty amazing regardless. i think most get pissed about the hp/twilight comparison bc they're not the same genre and both have very different plots, but iunno for sure.

Oddly, I never really see this in the Harry Potter Fandom that I'm in. Not all of them do, but a fair share of them actually bitch about her writing.

[identity profile] tambores.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Only that hating Twilight is not exclusive to the Harry Potter fandom.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
lol. I've been in HP fandom for 11 years. I don't know who you've been talking to, but almost every fan I've ever come across has been critical of some aspect of JK's work, and most freely admit the many problems with the structure of the writing itself. I can't think of anyone I know who doesn't have some problem with a character, or pacing, or one of the books, or a side plot, or SOMETHING.

Hell, I've written hundreds of thousands of words of HP fic and I could regale you with my own list of beefs about the series. Doesn't mean I don't love it. The folks who treat the series like an untouchable bible are few and far between. And as for the Twilight thing? Yeah, I hate Twilight, but I hate it because it's harmful to women, not because of any sort of comparison with HP.

It sounds like you took a very small sample of fen before you wrote this secret, or you're butthurt about something you're not telling us.

I AGREE ANON. Come at me everyone and start calling me a Twilight-fan, idgaf.

This fandom is the worst. I love every character and every ship, but even that's unconceivable because "WTF? Harry/Ginny are so random, please Hermion/Ron are so OTP that Harry/Hermione should not be shipper ever you delusional beings, Ginny is such a shallow character, etc etc."

There are some wonderful people in the HP-fandom of course, very clever and accepting, just as in every other group. But the amount of hatred and shaming I've seen from HP-fans to any person that dares to say anything wrong against the series is astounding. HP is far from being a literary masterpiece, but I will always be grateful that it introduced me to such a fantastic world of magic, friendship and fantasy.

Sappy TL;DR coming your way

[identity profile] nowherelander.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think us HP fans are quick to defend it because most of us grew up with it and it is an integral part of our childhood. I know that for me, personally it hasn't been about the pacing, the plot holes or the admittedly disappointing ending for a long time. I've made my peace with them. I love all the characters fiercely and, lame as that might seem to someone else, they've taught me most of what I know about love, family, bravery and fighting for what you believe in. I guess it feels like we're being insulted when someone criticises the books. It is very much irrational, I know and does not excuse the behavior, but there it is.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS! (Not about the Twilight part. Haven't read; don't care.) But HP is the most bile-filled, bully-rich hellhole of a fandom I've ever seen. Even worse: it's all surprise!Bile, since everyone hides their ugly behind flock. It should come with a warning, like tobacco.

The supreme wankers that ruin other fandoms, like SPN, Dr. Who, Torchwood, SGA, Merlin, can invariably be traced back to HP. I don't only avoid HP; I avoid everything the fen have touched.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think the majority of HP fans are like this -- or at least I hope they aren't. But this happens in all fandoms, haven't you noticed? There are those that can love a thing and still criticize it and there are those that can't love something without putting it on a pedestal and then dog piling anyone who dares say one thing against it. Just do your best to avoid the latter group at all costs and you can have a sane fandom life. :p

edit: The fact that a lot of people read these books while they were growing up doesn't help. Sometimes it can be hard to realize that a criticism of something you love isn't a criticism of you.

In the HP fandom circles I've been in, I haven't seen hardly any of this. So try hanging out with more chill fans, we're out there and still love the series. :)

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't know which part of the HP fandom you've been part of but the slashers usually critique JKR's work (mostly the epilogue, the deaths in DH) and most people don't make any kind of comparisons between the two fandoms.
i've read both and couldn't get into Twilight fandom. Personally I think Twilight is the worst badfic of all times that got published and I'm not saying HP/JKR is perfect.
I've never met much fandomwank in HP fandom and I've been in it for quite a few years.
But still, HP>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Twilight, canon and fandom both.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean about how vile the fandom is, OP. I adore the series like Umbridge adores doilies, but I really dislike discussing the series because so many of my fellow fans immediately jump down my throat like hungry wolves when I happen to voice an opinion that conflicts the majority - even things that one would think to be trivial, such as not shipping a popular pair or preferring how an actor in the films portrayed a character to how they were written in the books.

For a group of people who's fandom boasts the promotion of things like love and acceptance, they seem to be surprisingly quick to ready the torches and pitchforks.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed this series far more when I was younger, but I still love it.

However, it is definitely not a literary masterpiece like everyone says it is. It's not a diverse book and J.K. Rowling is horrible at writing the ladies. We don't even know what Hermione's parents NAMES are for crying out loud. But that's a whole other post.

Getting older and more critical/political/feminist or whatever you want to say has changed they way I view these books in a huge way.

I disagree with you.

It went downhill starting with Goblet of Fire, not Order of the Phoenix!

Otherwise, you are correct.

[identity profile] ninety6tears.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
People who are in a fandom for something have a tendency to think that that thing is really good, and unless the fandom in question is Twilight, that means they're going to think it's better than Twilight.
Usually they're right.
Edited 2011-02-15 22:04 (UTC)

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, a couple of things. First, the comparison to Twilight is silly and the HP fen who are all, they can't be more popular than us, I mean, things fade.

Second, a lot of the people who are more level-headed about the strengths and weaknesses of the series aren't deeply in the fandom anymore, or anyway aren't the people engaged in stuff like HP vs Twilight. They might still be writing fic, might still be discussing the books, but they aren't the ones rushing to their defense. And the people who really didn't much like the final books? They aren't in the fandom at all, because of the wave of "if you don't like it, there's the door" that swept the fandom after DH.

But that happens in a lot of fandoms. The canon ends, and the people who really loved the ending stay, and the people who didn't eventually drift away, and the new people who arrive are coming into a closed canon and know the score.

Way to generalize. Also, you're kind of a hypocrite - "better than thou" indeed.

And why anyone would compare HP to Twilight and vice versa is beyond me, they've got nothing in common except the fact that they're both written by successful women - and who both write very differently. Rowling is a story teller, Meyer is a romance novelist. See? Nothing in common.

[identity profile] roguebelle.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like the reactions to Mark Reads between the two fandoms disprove your secret entirely.

Point out a plothole or a writing flaw in HP, and most -- not all, but most -- HP fans will pretty much have the reaction of, "Yeah, lol, that happened". We know it has flaws. No writer is perfect. But we love it anyway.

Your secret makes me sad, really. Clearly you've only met the crappiest, most immature part of HP fandom and not the much cooler majority.

Who goes into a certain fandom and says, "I think (whatever is related to that fandom) sucks" and expects everyone there to be okay about it? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
come on now

i don't think that harry potter is a work of staggering genius, but even i feel insulted when it is compared to twilight. it's apples and oranges. fairly delicious apples and really, really shitty oranges.

Although there are SOME who believe that the series are perfect, they're not all as common as I've initially been led to believe myself, at least ever since time passed between the last books release and now.

I hated the last two books overall really. Sixth book was pretty boring besides the end with Dumbledor and Snape and had bully praising. The last one was horrible, far too many coincidences for it to logically work, and while I don't mind the hero relying on SOME help and luck, but it became utterly rediculous given all the coinidences and 'instinctive' thoughts just to push things along to the end. But I really got pretty much all my ranty time out in the open before now with other people who hated the last two books and I don't really feel the need to do so anymore.

Twilight however is still far worse. I mean HP had potential and an interesting world, and while the world is still severely messed up at the end- it still sort of has potential in fandom. While I am disappointed with Ginny and Hermione in the end of the series they are still WAY better than Bella- who basically was terrible from the get go. I mean at least they actually DO something. (Even if Ginny's is more off-screen... and sounds a hell of a lot more interesting and exciting than what her bf was doing).

Plus Harry may be a complete idiot who has severe problems with seeing someone else point of view at points, but at least he's not abusive and as controlling as Edward is to Bella when it comes to Ginny either.

By the end of the series I found the main trio pretty unbearable, but I'd still rather hand out with them than say the messed up Bella-Edward-Jacob trio. (If they could be called that.)

But Luna and Alice 'pwn' all of them. Though Luna more so.

To be honest the only reason they ARE compared is because Twilight touches into the supernatural and HP goes into fantasy itself as well as the fact the fandoms are loud and have a 'reputation' (Including the one in my icon at points, woo! But we're a lot better than we were it seems). Plus it came at the right 'time' when people were looking for something to 'replace' HP.

Overall HP is not perfect, but I still consider if more interesting than twilight. I mean at least HP actually has main characters which act a bit like PEOPLE rather than... whatever the heck those puppets in twilight are.

I don't think this applies to all of fandom, absolutely not, but I think there is a lot of fans that are like that (I know a lot of people like that, so yeah), and they are indeed annoying. But honestly, just ignore them and talk to the nice fans instead!
