I took a class on literature of fantasy. Everything else we read was fair game, but when it came to Harry Potter, the class became a book club. Dissecting the book and pointing out the flaws were met with animosity. Any opinion that did not fall along the lines of "OMG Rowling is brilliant" was dismissed.
The problem I have with the more rabid Harry Potter fans who actively hate on Twilight like it's their job is that they rarely seem to have read much outside of that specific genre. How can I take your opinion that Twilight is horribly written seriously when you think that Harry Potter is the best thing to happen to the literary world?
As a few people mentioned above, it must be because these fans grew up on Harry Potter. Things we love as children always seem more sacred.
