I enjoyed this series far more when I was younger, but I still love it.

However, it is definitely not a literary masterpiece like everyone says it is. It's not a diverse book and J.K. Rowling is horrible at writing the ladies. We don't even know what Hermione's parents NAMES are for crying out loud. But that's a whole other post.

Getting older and more critical/political/feminist or whatever you want to say has changed they way I view these books in a huge way.

"It's not a diverse book" always seems an odd thing to say, to me. It's set in the UK in the early 90s: it's pretty much exactly as diverse as the country was as a whole, if you look at (for example) the make-up of Harry's year (there was a census in 1991, so you can make quite a good comparison). I'd maybe complain that there's an under-representation of the working class, although a lot of that can probably be attributed to the Pureblood magic families and the recent civil war (which I imagine disproportionately wipe out non-Pureblood families).

DA

Moreso, books can be good without being diverse. Diversity is something to go for, but it doesn't fix a poor narrative.

And, yeah, the minorities are there in HP, but they're off to the side and not key in moving the story forward. Between Tonks, Fleur and others, you have women who are in theory badass athletes and aurors and everything else, but who don't show their stuff when it comes down to it. There are issues with all of that. But there's good stuff too, my favorite being the platonic friendship between Harry and Hermione.
