Wow, so, almost all the comments are proving your point entirely. I have never met a true Harry Potter fan who wasn't an asshole to me about it. Never in my life. This is different from casual fans. I grew up with the books as well, but after reading a few of them/having them read to me by my parents, I grew bored. I was more into Dianna Wynne Jones and books like that. I got through three and a half Twilight's before not being able to take that anymore, either. I'm not a Twilight fan, but, the fans of that that I've spoken with are generally self-aware enough to be like, yeah they're not great but they're fun. Harry Potter fans have seriously stopped being my friend because I didn't want to go see the newest movie and because I expressed that I wasn't a fan.

I wish it was more acceptable to not be a fan of Rowling... and I wish HP fans would chill the hell out.

Lol, yeah, you ran into some a-holes.

And I really, really can't relate. I'm a fan of the books, know loads of other fans, and we all have things we love to complain about when it comes to the books. For some, they hate James and Sirius because OMG BULLIES. Some have, have, have to keep mentioning how much better it could have been if it had been a serious fantasy book. I think the pacing was sacrificed in order to have each book take up a year.

Wherever these fans are, the ones who think HP is a flawless masterpiece, I haven't run into them. On the other end, I've known all of two Twilight fans, and they tried to argue for how wonderful the writing was, but didn't press the issue when it was apparent that no one was really interested. The rest of the group in those instances, in turn, didn't bash Twilight.

I have the feeling that out of my large sample, at least 20 or so assholes I know in real life, that it's not merely the smaller part of fandom. Pretty sure 20 out of 22 or so is a pretty accurate way to judge.

Ya know something, though? The fact that there are a lot of asshole HP fans out there doesn't change the fact of Twilight being terrible.

If this secret were just about how HP fandom is ridiculous and crazy, and there are HP fans out there with ridiculously unrealistic views of the books who can't take criticism and who think JK Rowling is the MOST AMAZING WRITER EVER OMG (hahaha yeah right), then it would be like, "ah, yes, you are quite correct!" But OP had to go and drag Twilight into it.

Ya gotta separate the two. HP fans are bonkers and fucking obnoxious, oh yes. But Twilight is also really fucking terrible, and the fact that HP fans hate it doesn't change that. Hell, it's a point in the HP fans' favor.
