You're not stupid. It's not a complicated game. I think a lot of people like to just try to make it SOUND more complicated than it actually is, for some reason.

Pinning down a good understanding on what "offsides" means should get you off to a good start!

[identity profile] fandomonymous.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Firstly, the fact that you've chosen to name your image "fussball.png" makes me hopeful that one of the clubs is a Bundesliga club, which fills me with glee. :3

Secondly, while some places on the internet may be hostile to people asking questions about the game itself, not all of them are! I encourage you to find a place where you can be fearless about asking about the game and people can and will answer. (I can recommend you places if you PM me, or even just try to answer your questions myself.)

Thirdly, there are tons of good blogs and such out there where you can read how others feel about tactics and rules and "how your team is doing"; I particularly recommend pretty much every Offside blog: http://www.theoffside.com So go find the blogs that match your clubs and do your research! You'll learn soon enough.

Finally - and I probably should have put this first - different people get different things out of the beautiful game. I'm one of those who loves loves loves getting deep into tactical discussion, but also is happy to just flail at the emotions and squee and good-looking. But whatever makes you happy to watch is whatever makes you happy to watch, so just enjoy it for what it is! :) Good luck to you OP!

[identity profile] duskyblueskies.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't get formations etc either at first OP, if I can learn it anyone can :)

I take it you're in fandom here on LJ? If you participate in match posts and see some one make a comment like "why are we're playing 4-4-2 again, it clearly doesn't work for us" and aren't sure what they mean or why they think it's bad, just ask. Certain communities on LJ might be, eh, less welcoming than others but find one where you feel at home and welcomed.

Finally, if you love the beautiful game you love the beautiful game. Some might like to talk tactics for hours, others love it for the emotions and the feeling of community. There isn't any need for you to feel stupid.

OP, you and me are in the same boat. I could tell you my favorite players, but I have no idea what their positions are and what they mean.

I played soccer, for years and I still don't know more than positions and basic rules.

[identity profile] jeremiagoeswoah.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
This. I used to play football all the time as a kid and teenager but no rule ever stuck with me apart from "put he ball in the goal".

[identity profile] kaasen.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. When I still played I knew all the rules and everything but I had no clue about the other stuff. I always played defense, though, so my job was less to score and more to get the ball away from the goal.

[identity profile] whatwouldwasdo.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh i've grown up with football and personally, i still have a hard time telling who in teams are playing well/badly unless the game has my FULL attention, so i can understand why it'd be hard for a newbie

if you care, you care. as long as you don't pretend to know more than you do, you should be fine (and you'll pick it up along the way)

[identity profile] phaethon.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Just keep watching and don't be afraid to ask questions. All sports fans were clueless newbies at some point, and immersion is the best way to pick things up.

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You just need more time, don't worry.

[identity profile] lovelorn-x.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I am new to football too but I have learned everything I need to know thanks to a commentator on a local tv. I think it's important to watch a game on a tv channel that has good, professional commentators; while the players are on the field he usually explains what is going on-if the game is bad, and why it's bad etc. :) Don't watch the games where the commentator is just being loud or, worse, is talking like he is bored out of his mind...

(Anonymous) 2011-02-19 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I was once there, OP! I'm not really active in football fandoms anymore. I became a bit jaded after a few years, and I really miss it, but the bullshit that eventually kept piling up makes me not want to return. But PLEASE don't be scared by my words. I hope you will have a long and fun time at your football fandoms and not get trapped into the bad aspects of fandom.

But anyway, like someone said above, it's really helpful to watch a game with commentators who discuss the games and players well. I also went to the library and browsed through some books (most were in the kids' non-fiction section, hehehe, they come with visuals XD ) and those also helped a lot with my understanding of the tactics and positions and gave me a better understanding with the game in general. The offside rule really fucked with my mind for a long time, but a book I read came with awesome visuals and it helped me loads.

My friend got me into xperteleven, a football manager simulator where you manage a team and compete against other teams.

My team was good enough to make it to the first division.

I still only have a cursory knowledge of football.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
1) Get your hands on a copy of Football Manager (aka Worldwide Soccer Manager)
2) Mess around with the game.
3) ????
4) Profit.

Really, I didn't really understand tatics or anything until I started playing that, and I've been a fan for a long time.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
completely OT, but I'm really amazed that CAPTCHA counted my transliteration of the hebrew it gave me as a valid response.

Book rec!

[identity profile] asimaiyat.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
My husband has long been a huge nerd for American football, but only recently got heavily interested in world football. He found the book Inverting the Pyramid: The History of Football Tactics (http://www.amazon.com/Inverting-Pyramid-History-Football-Tactics/dp/1409102041/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1298189864&sr=1-1) by Jonathan Wilson to be a fascinating read, and it seems to have helped him to understand the game a lot better.

You might enjoy it too, OP!

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure most footballers are too clear about the game. I can think of some players whose knowledge of the offside rule is sketchy to say the least.

The tactics stuff is interesting but not having a grasp of zonal marking isn't going to stop you enjoying a match. You know when someone is playing particularly well, or a team seems to be coming together as they should, 4-4-2 and the Christmas tree formation are just jargon. Listen to decent commentaries and it all becomes clear.
