Seriously, anon, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Write your book, get it published, and hopefully you'll get your own fan following. But only people who have no grasp of the sheer vastness of HPL's legacy would accuse one author of ruining Lovecraft forever.

Also, it might be worth your while to read this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rise-Fall-Cthulhu-Mythos/dp/0978991184/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1298152015&sr=8-1), if you haven't already.

Good luck :)

Ooooh, your book sounds like it's going to be fun. Adapting Lovecraft's universe to a new audience is a great idea. I hope you get published and a lot of people get to enjoy it!

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
If somebody bitches because someone who isn't white dares to write Lovecraft then they're the one who has a huge problem, not you. I'm not a Lovecraft expert but that's a part of his memory that deserves to be insulted.

(Unless I'm misinterpreting what you're saying...)

Anyway, your book sounds really interesting.

[identity profile] flipthefrog.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think there's even a way to wreck the Mythos without actually trying, so you're probaby fine. Best of luck to you, and I hope you scare the pants off those YA readers :D

[identity profile] mature.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, this HPL fan would love to read a new take on the Mythos. And I know that I'd be passing it on to other fans, so that's a little handful to start. \o/

[identity profile] lunaspoet.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
This HPL fan would love to read your book! Good luck with your writing!

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
THAT IS A VERY GOOD REASON TO DO IT.

But seriously, there's nothing wrong with a biracial girl writing something about the Mythos- I'd love to read more takes on them with female protagonist and/or in modern times. As long as there isn't an Old Ones version of Edward, it's all cool :)

Personally, I think it's all kinds of awesome for someone who knows they're outside what Lovecraft was able to recognize as "the right people" to be able to take his work, appreciate it, and do more with it. There is no denying that Lovecraft was a racist, sadly, but I like to believe that if he had been less unhappy personally, or born at a later time when racism was not as acceptable a way for white males to deny their personal failings, he might have overcome it.

In a way, OP, you are helping him overcome it, by making his work more like what he might have done if his perspective had not been crippled. Go for it.

Go ahead!

I'm glad you decided to do away with Derleth and others! I wrote my BA thesis on Lovecraft and since then I simply cannot look at his followers the same way I did before. Lovecraft himself had a wonderfully consistent and elegant vision, which was then only watered down by introducing the opposition you wrote about.

My point is, original Lovecraft was soulcrushing due to the philosophical implications of his writing, and Derleth & co. just made it into a fantasy conflict of gods and monsters.

Or, to make it even simpler, they made fantasy from science fiction.

Which I consider a terrible decision.

Good luck to you; I'd gladly read your novel!

I'm really interested in your thesis topic, anon!

Re: Go ahead!

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I wrote about Lovecraft's personality creation - and, after reading the bulk of his work, letters (which are fascinating!) and biographies I came to the conclusion that he wasn't so much of a scientist and a gentleman as he liked to claim. However, the matter is a bit more complicated - after all, he himself probably believed in his invented artistic persona.

Overall, it's a short biographical study connected with some literary analysis. If you'd like to give it a look, I'd be glad to upload it somewhere to to mail it to you - although be warned: if it is not apparent by now, English is my second language ;) The text itself is in English, but who knows how many awkward passages are still there.

Anon, if it wouldn't be too much trouble, I would also like to take a look at your thesis :)

Re: Go ahead!

[identity profile] cordelia-gray.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love to have a look, it sounds really interesting. I've always been a little fascinated by Lovecraft, as well as by his world.

And I would never have guessed that English was not your native language!

Re: Go ahead!

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! :)

The thesis is available for download here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/449003491/Lovecraft.doc

Te first chapter is basically the theoretical groundwork; concepts such as author, writer, scriptor, hero etc. Chapters 2&3 are pure Lovecraft. If you'd like to comment on it, feel free to; just put a dot between my name and my surname and add @gmail.com ;) Unfortunately, I can't really continue my research on Lovecraft; my university doesn't have an AmLit MA seminar at the moment, so now I write my MA on Canadian literature. I didn't suspect that it would be so different! ;)

Cool, thanks! I look forward to reading it when I'm not on my phone :)

What aspect of Canlit are you doing?

Re: Go ahead!

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It may sound awfully speficic, but my MA thesis is about the construction of identity in the autobiographical Metis writings ;)

Re: Go ahead!

[identity profile] cordelia-gray.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow! That does sound awfully specific, and very far from Lovecraft, though I cans see where the "construction of identity" thing fits with your undergrad thesis topic.

What Metis literature are you working from? I know "Half-Breed" but that's about the only one I'm familiar with.

Re: Go ahead!

(Anonymous) 2011-02-22 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Campbell's "Halfbreed" is indeed one of the texts I analyze! I also write about Beatrice Culleton's "In Search of April Raintree", which is sort of her fictionalized autobiography, and two strictly autobiographical works: Howard Adams' "Otapawy!" - quite contemporary narrative of a Metis leader - and "A Son of the Fur Trade", 19th century memoirs of one Johnny Grant, a Metis trader. It may be far from Lovecraft, but I enjoy it a lot! The Metis stories are in general so depressing that you can't help but feel better in comparison ;)

Just commenting to say that I'm also very interested, have downloaded, and will read when I have the time.

Best of luck for your MA :)

Re: Go ahead!

[identity profile] anactoria.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I like this comment.

OP, you should go for it. Good luck with your writing!

[identity profile] cordelia-gray.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Please write this, OP! The Chtulhu mythos is plenty big enough to enfold your ideas in its tentacled embrace :)

And Lovecraft's racism is not an aspect of his legacy to be celebrated: bringing a more diverse perspective to the Mythos can only make it better.

I hope I get to read this one day :)

[identity profile] hat-fm.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
I, for one, would love to read this. I always enjoy reading a new spin on the Mythos.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-21 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I know this isn't what you meant, but your worries about attracting haters like Twilight has gave me the hilarious/awful vision of a book series that turns the Old Ones into sparkly emo lust objects for tweens and middle-aged women trying to recapture their tween glory. The wank between Team Cthulhu and Team Yog-Sothoth would be epic.
