...but, there was a happy ending, so why focus on this scene?

(Anonymous) 2011-02-19 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
You call that a happy ending? They're basically doomed to an endless cycle of their owners growing out of them and being discarded until they are eventually irreversably broken. Yeah there's not really any other way for it to end considering they're toys, but it's about as much of a happy ending as Let the Right One In's ending.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
In terms of Andy giving them to the little girl to play with and love and them not being incinerated, yes it's a happy ending. Plus, they were all together. For being toys with no control over what happens to them, what more could they ask for?

ok yes if you only look literally at the one moment at the end of the movie.
what i'm saying here is that that's too simplistic, there's no real way for there to BE a happy ending if you think beyond that moment. If I was going to be really pretentious and emo I would posit that being incinerated would in fact be the happier ending because it would mean they would never have to go through the abandonment again, but i'm not, so i won't

It would make for a great Philosophy class: The Existentialism of Toys :)

(Anonymous) 2011-02-19 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
But that's life. We all die in the end: that is literally the only final ending possible for anyone, ever. To be passed on to another child, another family, so that they can have a second life? That's a wonderful result, as is ending up in the nursery school: the toys get to have a new life as long as they live, until they die. Woody has presumably done well, being passed from someone else to Andy, and then on. They might live long enough to end up with yet another child, or get donated to the nursery school, or they might die before that becomes relevant. Everyone dies. Better to live first.

Vampire girl kills the bullies of her new young love and they run away together? What about that isn't totally romantic?

Happy Endings don't have to be perfect.

[identity profile] easilyentranced.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there really was no conceivable way for them to get out of there that they knew of. I think it's cool that they faced that reality and joined hands, accepting their fate. It was pretty heavy for a kid's flick, but most of us knew that something was gonna come save them and I think it's good to expose kids to something heavy like that every once in a while.

I'd be more traumatized if that was actually how the movie ended.

[identity profile] flipthefrog.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
+1. There was such a sense of dignity to that scene for me that I can't really explain very well.

[identity profile] know1shome.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. I've been trying to find the word to describe it for a while, and "dignity" is perfect. I was really moved when they all joined hands, and I can't exactly describe it.

[identity profile] raddishh.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly my thoughts. When death is unavoidable and staring you in the face, do you struggle against it, or accept it with serenity? (I think it reflected peoples life philosophies as well- do you live your life in fear of death, or do you accept it as natural and unavoidable, something that comes to all of us someday?) And while it may be a nightmarish situation, they wouldn't have to die alone.

In fact, there are so few times in life when people do NOT die alone that it was surprisingly sweet in my opinion.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-19 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a sad scene but I'm sorry your childhood has not been "raped".

+1

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
While I'm sorry that scene bothered you so much, and on such a level, but...ugh, did you have to use that wording?

Re: +1

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, and also just needed to add how your icon is hilariously apt for this secret. ^_^

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
FOR. REAL. I honestly haven't cried that hard during a movie in years. Literally. I watch a LOT of movies and keep lists of them because I'm weird that way, and when I got back from that movie I checked and nothing has affected me that much. JFC. The emotions are so incredibly real and human and mature and...fuck.

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
While I think "rape" is a bit of an unnecessary metaphor, I agree it was so intense that I'm amazed they got away with putting it in a movie that, yes, is a 'family film' so both adults and kids can enjoy it - but its target audience is primarily children. It puts some of the things in Don Bluth's old 80's movies in perspective and that's saying a lot.

In fact, when watching it, do you know what it reminded me of? And I'm probably gonna get hate for this but, honestly, it's not intentional - just the first thing that came to mind; the ending of the Boy In The Striped Pajamas.

Yep. A friggin' Pixar movie about animate toys reminded me of a movie about Auschwitz. I...don't even. 0_o Not saying it was as horrible as that in any stretch of the imagination, just that the circumstances were a bit familiar.

Of course, they got out and all - hooray - but only thanks to an incredible deus ex machina. To think if circumstances hadn't been just right for that to happen..Yikes.

Trust people on YouTube to have already made their own edits so as to have that as the alternative ending. LOL

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome icon!

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding the icon love.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-19 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I was about to get emotional, and be impressed by the makers' audacity, and then they totally copped out and substituted a saccharine sad-happy ending instead.

I'm bemused by how many adults were reduced to tears by this.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

...Are you assuming they meant to say amused? Why? "Bemused" still makes sense in that context. Or is there some other word they are misusing here that I'm not picking up on?

[identity profile] corvigryph.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
But the ending was happy ;.;

[identity profile] mythc-writer.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I saw that scene as a sign of strength. Their deaths are approaching and there's no way out. So they hand hands and stay together during their last moments...or what they thought would be their last moments. I find that courageous and very touching.

As for the secret, raped is a really harsh word to use and it's a sensitive word too. If you're having nightmares about it still, I think some medical help should be looked at.

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll admit, I only actually saw the movie the other night (Yeah, I know...where have I been?) but the whole time I was thinking "Ok, I heard it's going to get dark and depressing...Everyone I've talked to who has seen this movie says it gets pretty dark...."

Then that scene happened.
