She doesn't count because Disney didn't want to pay Amy Acker for using her image, the real one or the cartoon one.

But I agree, OP, Giselle would have been an awesome Disney princess. I loved Enchanted and thought her character was a blast to watch adjusting to the real world.

Hee. Amy Adams, not Amy Acker. But yes, came here to say this.

She is a Disney princess, but Disney decided against doing any merch for her because they were told they would have to pay Amy Acker for likeness rights for the rest of her life, and they decided it wasn't worth it.

[identity profile] accented.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought Enchanted was supposed to be poking fun at Disney princess stories. It'd be pretty awkward to include her in the franchise.

Also, Disney decides which girls become official princesses based on marketing, or so I've heard. And as much as I love Giselle, I don't think she'd do very well merchandise-wise, her being not animated for most of the movie and all that.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Enchanted isn't part of the Disney Animated Canon to my knowledge, so Giselle can't be an official Disney princess.
The above reasons re marketing also apply, but that's the main one as far as I'm concerned.

She is indeed awesome, though. :3

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
What the commenters said above about not wanting to pay the actress who played the part. But other than that, it wouldn't make much sense to add her. She's practically the deconstruction of a princess. She starts off wanting the fairy tale life and prince, but in the end decides that a normal life with a normal guy is the one she really wants.

As far as your point about Pocahontas and Mulan goes, Pocahontas may not have worn a tiara and ended up with a prince in the first movie, but she was the daughter of the chief. And considered of great importance. Mulan as well might not be a traditional princess, but at the end of the movie she was honored by the emperor and respected by all of China.

Haters gonna hate, I guess. But Mulan and Pocahontas will always be fabulous.

[identity profile] xelestri.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they would've had to have paid the actress to use her likeness for the rest of her life, and that didn't sit well with Disney, so she doesn't count as a Disney Princess.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Amused by the Amy "Acker" comments thus far.

But as others have said, it's because Disney didn't want to pay Amy Adams for her likeness for the rest of time. It gets expensive.

[identity profile] helplessdancer.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh thank god I'm not the only one giggling at that.

Technically she didn't marry a prince..but still remained awesome. One of my fave Disney films :)

[identity profile] iceshade.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I think she's considered an unofficial princess though. But yes, Amy Adams, likeness, royalties, Disney said no, etc.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically what everyone said. Disney didn't want to pay Amy Adams, even though they could've easily afforded it - it's just that Adams would've made more money from it than Disney. And Disney can't have that.

Still, as far as I'm aware, Giselle is one of the most popular Disney heroines among little girls ATM and she is considered a "real" Disney princess by many. Though I suspect the popularity has more to do with the pretty, long and blond hair (other top favorites are Cinderella, Aurora and Rapunzel, all of whom are blond - interestingly Alice is one of the least favorite heroines) than with the actual personality; which I think is a shame considering how much work and thought was put into Giselle's character, personality-wise.

She was planned to be part of the princess line, but as others have said, Disney didn't want to pay royalties to use her likeness. Which, really, they probably should have thought about before hand...

[identity profile] spider-rogue.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, I love Giselle. She reminds me of my best friend IRL. ♥ If they made stuff with her on it I would buy it too.

What everyone else already said, and also, aside from Tiana, they had no plans to add anyone else to the Princess Club. That is to say, when Enchanted was in production (as a not-animated feature film; the first part "doesn't really count" to Disney), they already knew that "The Princess and the Frog" was going to get made and Tiana was going to be the "last official Princess," unless they changed thier minds on the Rapunzel feature ("Tangled") again.

But Mulan and Pocahontas at least have stature that makes them Princess-y. What about ALICE?! I have never understood why she's in the Princess Club.

Mulan isn't even a princess...I know the "Disney princess image" is more about selling than anything else. But don't they have to be a princess? Don't get me wrong, I love Mulan but she's not and never will be a princess. Pocahontas is a princess of sorts given she's the daughter of the leader of the tribe.

because pocahontas is an actual princess (daughter of the chief) and MULAN SAVED CHINA and she deserves it.
