As someone from the inside, allow me to say said companies want you to pirate said programs. Said companies are usually the people that leak the bootlegs; all of them have a certain defect in the model so as your bootleg program works just a little bit under how the normal program works. But it still works fine?

Why is this done? Because it can't possibly expected for everyone to spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars on a legal program when they're first learning. It's understood kids need to learn somewhere and a lot of them are paying to put themselves through school. No one can expect you to shell out thousands and thousands of dollars for certain 3D programs when you're first starting out; you won't even know what you're doing for a good year or so.

When you join a company, the company will then buy a company licence of the program, or a school, etc. That's where said companies make their money.

I just posted below you and didn't see this. This is a good comment. I didn't know these secrets, thanks for sharing.

Absolutely. A lot of the software companies actually are laughing at the music industry for harassing people who pirate. One may not be inclined to believe so, but a certain dosage of piracy, especially when planned, can help boost sales and ultimately revenue. After all, if you worked at Adobe, wouldn't you rather have 10 million people able to use your program so more companies would buy it and shell out thousands on the company licence than 10 thousand people know how to use it and have less companies interested? It balances out.

So by all means, pirate away!

This is a good thread. Hell, it was even recently proven with anime or manga or something that piracy does boost sales (at least in Japan where they can buy it all in the first place).

Waaaait, SERIOUSLY?! I honestly have never heard of anything like this before. It's... really odd yet very heartwarming. THERE ARE SOME BUSINESSES WHO AREN'T DOUCHEBAGS, YAY! <3

Now if only the music, anime, manga, and video game companies would get their asses on this <<;

Eeehh, it's different than software when it comes to products like music, comic books, TV, etc etc. Their main income source comes from people who buy their products, while as anon said above, software companies get their income from schools and businesses that buy their licenses.

I'll have to disagree with you here. Same person from way above, I can tell you first hand that the illegal downloading threat is blown way out of proportion. It's a neat marketing tool, and though I wouldn't actually say it's heart warming in any regard, because it's still a advertising technique, it can be used in almost any industry in the planet. As another person in this topic said, a recent study was commenced in Japan whereby they studied the sales boost illegal downloading contributed to anime and manga, and the sales actually increased.

It's not really as bad as you may think, despite the supposed moral issue behind illegally downloading something. But if you wish to buy it legally, the more power to you. The industry will benefit either way from your interest in the product. It's either advertising or it's profit.

Okay, I totally did not know about this. That's a pretty interesting bit of information, anon :)

(Anonymous) 2011-02-21 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's actually EVIL.

If all your life you have been given forks "for free" and they suddenly drop you in China, where you have the alternative of using "free" chopsticks or buying a 400 dollars fork, you'll be more than willing to pay for the 400 dollars fork just to start eating right now instead of waiting till you have learned how to use the chopsticks.

They make you dependable on their technology and unwilling to learn new ones. Why do you think most people do not ask to have Windows removed from their brand new computers even if doing so would save them 100 dollars (more or less)?

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure the music industry is in charge of their own "leaks" too, at least for new artist. How do you get people to hear them when it's expensive to do so?

The manga and anime industry are nice, I think. They don't have a problem with scanlating UNLESS they think you're making money out of it. And they'll never send your scanlating group a "Cease and Desist" unless they are already publishing the manga in your language AND you're having a bad effect on their sales. They know that if more people follow their products, even if not by legal means, they'll be much more willing to buy the legal product when it's in their country and, obviously, merchandising.

Why did you think that they targeted Mangahelpers and OneManga instead of the scanlations groups?

[identity profile] caterfree10.livejournal.com 2011-02-21 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, the fork VS chopstick analogy kinda fails with me considering I actually know how to use both, but I see what you're saying. |D;;; /brick'd for deliberately missing the point

And, ehhhh, I don't know about how nice the anime and manga industry really is. There's a lot of big name people in the industry (both manga-ka and industry professionals) who have gone on record saying that they "want manga/anime pirates to die" (paraphrasing, btw) and blame them for how little the anime companies are making (instead of, ya know, the economy which sucks pm worldwide still). There's no major lawsuits going on as of yet /cynical but that doesn't mean they're any kinder than some of the other industries.

Though I do see your point on attacking OneManga VS scanlation groups seeing as scanlation groups try not to use ads and instead rely on donations to keep their sites running and to get raws. But then I think of MangaToshoukan and how they had to remove basically EVERYTHING from their site that was Japanese manga INCLUDING unlicensed manga no thanks to the "manga coalition". I could understand if it were all stuff that is available in the US like Bleach, Naruto, Cardcaptor Sakura, Wish, etc, but for obscure ones that will never see the light of day outside Japan like Double Arts? WTH?

this is awesome, and makes every bit of sense. i had heard something like this before but without explanatory details.

i did well in school AND got my current art-related job (where we use legally purchased software) because i knew how to use the programs way before i could afford them. i STILL can't afford them on a personal level-- it's just not feasible for most individuals. i would love to, because pirating is nerve-wracking, but i'd rather keep paying rent and eating food.
if someone wants to judge my fanwork for coming from pirated software, be my guest.

thanks, insider! to you and your company.
