I think a lot of the time it's not loyalty but just taste. If you genuinely like one pairing it sometimes makes you not enjoy others with those same people (or maybe you just don't care for those pairings anyway).

Some people like lots of pairings, and some people don't. Why is this hard to understand? I can multiship some characters, but not others, and never ones that I've written in fic. Some people can also write endless canon-based first time fics, and I can't do that either; once I've written it, I've written it.

For me it completely depends on the fandom and characters. Some I can multiship, while others I only like with that one particular person and won't read any other pairing fics. The pairing in my icon for example, I don't like to ship with anyone else.

See, I think I'm also doing it wrong because for me, OTP doesn't mean 'OMFG DIE FOR MY SHIP' it just means that this pairing is the one I support the most in any given fandom, but I can still have other pairings I'm into as well.

Eh, I think it depends. I mean most of the time I'm a rabid multishipper no matter what the fandom, but sometimes a relationship will hit me so hard that I cannot really bare anything else involving those two characters in relationships with people not each other. It's so draaaaaaaaaaaamatic, but it's kind of fun to be that attached to something. It means the characters resonated enough that you really like them.

That being said, people do take it to the extreme and there's nothing wrong with not having an "OTP" though it is kind of fun.

Hmm...you know, for me an OTP is something that I like to come back to, it doesn't mean I support them 24/7 or that I spent my days making fanworks for that OTP, it's just the one (or more) I'll always have a weakness for.

For me it's Gambit/Rogue from X-men, I have liked them since I saw the cartoon as a kid and still do, but I haven't read any fic about them in years.

Yeah. Agreed. Although I understand it more in the context of canon, and people shipping things that are or could become canon.

My modus operandi is to have a Fandom Bicycle, which is a concept kind of mutually exclusive with having an OTP. I basically have that one character that I want to read every pairing about. I have favorites, but never really exclusive favorites.

Sometimes it's just chemistry. Like, one couple might just click with someone better than other pairings do.

And sometimes I ship one half of my OTP with others, but not with the same seriousness as I do the otp. But multishipping is a lot more fun, anyway. :)

Meh! I'm a big multishipper and even in fandoms where I have an OTP, I can (and often do) ship one or both parties with other people as well, never mind my simultaneous love for a bunch of other ones. I guess OTP to me just means ~most preferred~ ship, or something similar. (icon related and a very good example :D)

I would have one of the few who will be at odds with this secret if only because I personally find the idea of one half of my favourite pair involved with another character I wouldn't ship with rather... uncomfortable, if only because I'm that emotionally invested into my pairings more than an average shipper. But different strokes for different folks, people can multiship as much as they want, as long as I don't get involved in the party. I can make a few exceptions, depending on what pair and what fandom, but I'm such a loyal monoshipper. And a closet romantic.

I think it's because OTP originally came from the phrase 'One True Pairing' - it was a lot more of a phrase referring to how certain types of fangirls can get very tied into this one pairing or relationship over all others, like it's their 'One True Love' of pairings, their ultimate, their apex.

Nowadays people just use it to signify anything they ship.
