Actually, it's physically impossible for humans to even actually process tragedy on that scale. We can literally only process a certain amount of people as being truly 'human' before our brain sort of shuts down and can't do all of it, so eventually we have to categorize a large amount of the population as a generic 'other'. Along with that, if you tried to internalize and really feel grief for all the bad things in the world, you'd just go insane from sorrow and be utterly useless and unable to help anything or anyone. It's not good for anyone to be that way.

That said, people still give back because we realize the danger of giving into this notion of everyone else being 'other' instead of human. The most successful species are the social species, the ones that look past their immediate instincts for self-preservation in order to preserve a society. You can't save everyone, and while you can't feel for them all, I do implore that you make efforts to donate time, effort, or at the very least money on occasion to causes you deem fit.
