I haven't played half of Final Fantasy games, but those I have all handled more or less openly serious issues like mental health problems, life after loved one's death, global pollution, religion in its solace and deceptiveness, abusive parents, and such. Could get tiresome in realistic stories, but here I thought it was beautiful. It's possible VIII wasn't supposed "not to be thought of too deeply" either. Plot had several silly moments, why wouldn't you give some slack for silly fan theories too. Some enjoy them, these ones even came with reasonings.

I think Rinoa=Ultimecia would be romantic. In tragically intense Brokeback way which is sadly nowadays reserved mostly for same-sex pairings. (I love it with any pairings...). After seeing how power corrupts you, or not seeing it, Squall still chooses Rinoa, and is happy with it. Or if Squall dies, he finds this feeling of love from within him, even if one-sided. IDK, not fully futile. ~~Not more than the game itself with its "who cares how and why things happen" moments.~~ Even if authors crookedly meant such hidden layers to be there (I doubt it but still prefer it), they also meant it to be vague, so you shouldn't worry about it if you prefer the story straightforwardly.

Then again, I saw Cloud and Sephiroth having tragic unspoken attraction for each other. And that was futile (mostly because it was unspoken). You're going to convert person like me to like FFVIII as it is? ^_^
