This argument always gets me, because how do you KNOW that a given character is 100% straight and would never ever consider being with someone of the same sex? Bisexual people exist! And sometimes someone just happens to find the lone exception to their "rule." Fanfiction is all about what-if scenarios. Why is incidental homosexuality a "defilement" (great word choice, btw) of canon when fanfiction is, by default, non-canon?

Anyway, whatever the case, I don't see what the big deal is. If there's a character who is in a firmly-established and canonically straight relationship, sure, it'd be weird and jarring to see them in a gay relationship. But if it's a character who doesn't have a love interest or any other indication of their sexuality, how do you know they're straight? (I realize the default assumption is that everyone's straight, but that's another issue entirely.)
