I don't understand how anyone can talk about canon-defilement and consume/produce any kind of fanwork at all. It's ALL canon-defilement, we're just talking about degrees. AUs are way more defiling than something relatively minor as orientation.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-16 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a slight difference, though, in throwing in a different plot development and completely changing a straight or gay character's orientation. I don't like it when I read gay characters as straight, either. It seems a betrayal to the source material.

YMMV, I know.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-16 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless the story is a romance, the sexual orientation would have virtually no affect on the plot. The only betrayal you're bringing to this is your own baggage.

Uh, no, unless you're trying to say that being gay or being het is some STRANGE BIZARRE CLOWNISH THING. And yeah, it would be like altering what the characters were wearing, the difference between jeans/sweaters vs. shorts/t-shirts. It CAN affect the situation (what the weather is like, i guess) but to a VERY MINIMAL degree, the basic story structure will be left unchanged.

Seriously, there are Star Wars fics out there that set out to redeem Darth Vader, there are fics where the main characters are recast as cowboys or astronauts or miners, and sexuality is the thing that you take issue with?

I bet you would've assumed that Dumbledore was straight.

There are large numbers of characters in any number of fandoms in which sexual orientation is not a) defined, b) play an integral role in the plot, or c) construed as Word of God, Never Gonna Change Fact.

If a fandom's source material does not explicitly confirm a character's sexual orientation, does that mean we are to assume they're straight until proven gay? And even so, we've seen in reality that there are people who have lived "straight" lives for a portion of their adult lives, without accepting or acknowledging their sexual attraction to the same gender. Happens all the time: people "realizing" they're gay, or living a "straight" life to conform to social norms and then finally having enough of that one day. Why can't that happen with fictional characters?

This is not even addressing the concept that a character could be bisexual, or any other level on the Kinsey scale, that just wasn't mentioned in the source material because they couldn't cope with it/were a minor character not developed fully/was too busy fighting dragons or saving the world or some shit.

+1

A+

Making a character gay/lesbian/whatever when they're straight just seems like canon-defilement to me.

Okay, but how often does a character come out and say "I am completely heterosexual." In my entire life, I don't think I've seen this happen more than ten times. In which case, aren't you assigning heterosexuality as the default sexuality when a character hasn't mentioned it? How is it defiling canon then?

[identity profile] phaethon.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
This argument always gets me, because how do you KNOW that a given character is 100% straight and would never ever consider being with someone of the same sex? Bisexual people exist! And sometimes someone just happens to find the lone exception to their "rule." Fanfiction is all about what-if scenarios. Why is incidental homosexuality a "defilement" (great word choice, btw) of canon when fanfiction is, by default, non-canon?

Anyway, whatever the case, I don't see what the big deal is. If there's a character who is in a firmly-established and canonically straight relationship, sure, it'd be weird and jarring to see them in a gay relationship. But if it's a character who doesn't have a love interest or any other indication of their sexuality, how do you know they're straight? (I realize the default assumption is that everyone's straight, but that's another issue entirely.)

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
But um. I've only seen a character's sexuality be confirmed straight like once or twice. A character canonically being in a heterosexual relationship or canonically showing interest in the opposite sex doesn't make that character straight. They could be bisexual, but not seeing anyone of the same sex that they're interested in during the timeline of the canon.

...Unless you don't believe bisexuals exist. I keep forgetting that I'm a mythological creature, like a dragon or something, to so many people.

How do you handle canon gayness?

Hey, Charlie Sheen - stop listening to the voices in your head for a minute and go back and read the fucking question. I asked how you felt about about canon gay characters for fanworks. You know, like Kurt from Glee?

Way to turn jumping to conclusions into an Olympic event. That was inappropriate to direct at me. Forget the question - I HAVE your answer. ::shudder::

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
You're still not getting it; I don't care what you think of sexuality itself. (Which is why I was pissed off at your initial reply - don't yell at me if other commenters are dogpiling you for that.) I'm asking - STILL - what you think of canonically gay characters being portrayed as gay in fan media. Your original comment suggests all fictional characters are straight, but they're not; some are stated gay or bisexual.

Hey chief, I know you're venturing into a lady-cootie-ridden territory that you're extraordinarily unfamiliar with, but you may want to tone down the OFFENDED STRAIGHT DUDE flailing.

Worse, you personally insult me, a member of a local gay/straight alliance by accusing me of being homophobic.

LOL you are too much fun. Have you read the latest entry in your own livejournal?

How can it be that I, alone, have discovered the treasure that is you?

Troll harder.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
And I do take great joy in defiling canon. :9 Oh hey what's this...?

If I get advantages because I'm white, a man, and heterosexual, AWESOME. Lots of people get advantages because they're born into rich families, or they're hot, or they're part of a subculture that's suddenly become trendy and they exploit that. That's the world. Suck it up hippie.

Also, most people who use the word "privilege" are incredibly prejudiced against whites, straight people, or men, so you're pretty massive assholes for waving it around like it's the new n-word or something.

Oh [livejournal.com profile] davidshephard, what ARE you doing here. The Fark forums are that way. And troll school is on the way.
