Some of us just have to fight harder for what we want.

From one Webcomic artist to another...keep it up. Smile at her success, and applaud your own. If you want to be where she is, keep fighting.

There could be 200 behind-the-scene factors as to why she's better than you.

I always think of it this way. I may be older than a lot of my peers but I didn't start drawing "When I was a baby." I didn't attended art school or even college. I can't possibly afford a Cintiq. I do the best I can do every day and that's all I can do.

As long as there's improvement you're never bad.

And it could also be dumb luck or meeting the right people, you never know...

that's why

Shit Happens and Life Sucks.
That's why.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm... Yuko Ota, maybe?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That's my guess. And now I'm going to go check if Johnny Wander has updated recently. Okay.

[identity profile] no-one-specific.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I've asked myself "Why her and not me" for a million things. It's natural. You're jealous. Work hard, and be happy for the things you do do and be proud of yourself for what you are able to do. Keep working at it. Even if you don't get to the same level as she is, you will still be accomplished. Don't let not being her stop you from reaching your potential. If that makes sense.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
But OP's life will hardly ever be as ~perfect~ as the life of a woman she described (for me, her life looks like a picture of perfectness and success, at least).

There is always someone who has it better than you. This is true in every case.
But you should consider that this particular person has problems that you don't even know about, and likely never will, because no one actually has a perfect life.
Be glad for what you do have, and work hard for what you want.

After the platitudes, back to lurking

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a natural human response to be jealous, hun, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, a lot of the greatest people to ever exist were not gifted when they were younger, and there are more than a few quotes running around about hard work trumping all. Try, try, and try again; if you want to improve, you will.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Because that's how the world works. there's gonna be people who have exactly the life you want. nothing to do but keep working on yours

[identity profile] aquaricom.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, we've all been there. The "younger than me" one always stings me the most everytime I see a DA prodigy kid. Keep your head up and just keep drawing. We need people like you to break barriers anyways :)

good point about the race card thing too...I hate style arguments sooo much.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
My jealousy would stop at her talent and success, since that shit's relevant. Does having perfect skin really help her draw better than me? Hell no.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
not to be a giant dick about this, but have you ever considered that maybe she's just a better artist than you?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
So what? I'm jealous of better artists all the damn time. Damn them, those better-than-me bastards!

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't that one of the points of the secret? I'm not sure what you're getting at here.

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
...Y'know her writer/bf was well-established and popular thanks to Applegeeks, and that likely shot Johnny Wander up quite fast as a result, right?

Not that it isn't a good comic, I'm just saying. Maybe she didn't have to work at it as much as others, but her writer did in a way.

[identity profile] the-and-moose.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
She had a well established comic before JW. :) So I think they both brought something to the table. :)

I quite like Johnny Wander, but I hope you keep trying OP. Make as many connections as you can with other artists, and get word spread about your comic. It is very easy to compare yourself, and that's cool, but I'd recommend looking at where Ota is now as a goal.

If you wanted to send me a link to your comic privately or whatnot, I'd definitely love it as I'm always looking for new comics to read.

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
I understand where you're coming from OP. I'm an artist as well and I get jealous of the better known artists in the digital painting world. But...I realized thinking that way was more damaging than good so I turned that energy into studying what they did and learn from their works.

Maybe if you invest that time instead of letting those bad feelings build up, you'll improve in ways you never imagined. It's hard because every artist wants to get noticed and it seems all the hard work is for naught, but it isn't true. Every time you draw something new you're improving tenfold. =)

And this is a fandom secret how....?
